There's a lot of talk of placement in corners and all around the room on the floor ... but what about raising the sub a foot or three higher? What effect does it have on sound when subs are not on the floor?

It's similar to moving the sub away from any other wall/corner/boundary.


Only it's easier to move a 100lb sub away from a corner than it is to put it on a stand 3ft off the floor.

So do you generally get a better FR in the corner a few feet above the ground? How about out of the corner and a few feet off the ground vs. the same position on the floor?


Bah, just when I thought the trial and error was over another variable enters the equation. Should I even bother experimenting with this?

I'd worry more about placement on the ground. For example, if you have two of the same sub, you could measure one on the ground, and the same response for the one stacked on top of it, to see the difference.


If you want to find the best placement, get your computer or laptop in your HT room, hook up your SPL meter as a mic, and use the Room EQ Wizard free software to measure the response. Put the sub at the listening location and move the mic, measuring at different locations. You'll see in near real-time how moving the location can change the sound you get at your listening position.
