I have a room that is 17 feet long, 11 feet wide and 9 feet tall which is roughly 1700 cubic feet. I recently upgraded my surround sound system to a 5.1.4. My current speakers are:

(2) Kef R3 fronts
(1) Kef R2C center
(2) Kef R300 rears (yes overkill but love it)
(4) Kef 200QR for Atmos and multi channel use.

The sub I am currently using is a Polk PSW505
I have a Denon AVR- X6500 receiver.
My budget is between $900-$1500
Size of the sub isn't an issue.
We listen to 70% music and 30% H/T. Going forward I think the H/T use will be more like 50/50. I will be adding a bit of gaming in the future but that might be an hour or two per week of play. We don't crank the music up to concert levels and are looking for something to compliment the above mentioned speakers.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations and I apologize if I missed any important information

There are a lot of great single 15"-18" subs you could get in that price range. If you're open to duals, I think your situation sounds perfect for a pair of Hsu VTF2 Mk5. For your personal scenario, I think you'll benefit more from the even coverage and smooth response you get from dual 12" subs, even if you sacrifice a tiny bit of extension.

How is your seating laid out? Your room is fairly small, so it won't take a huge sub to energize the room. If you can extend your budget a bit, the HSU VTF-3 mk5 HP is currently on sale and duals would be $1710. Two of those in your room would be very impressive. Going this route would also squelch any possible upgrade-itus you might get in the future if you were to go with dual VTF-2's, PB-2000's or other similar 12" subs. ;)

Our room is pretty much a rectangle. TV, front's and center are in the front and seating is in the back. Here's a picture:

We recently finished adding the speakers and I haven't patched the holes, on the to do list this weekend. The one thing I have always wanted was the thump in your chest sort of feel (wife may disagree) and while we don't blast tunes or movies would be fun to have that "feeling" occasionally. Can the Hsu's do that?

By your pic it looks like the room opens to other areas/rooms, so that space also factors into the equation. The "chest punch" effect you can get from a sub is usually in the mid-bass, like around 60-80Hz. The HSU subs are known for being strong performers overall, but particularly 40Hz and up. The VTF-3 would be a good "puncher", so to speak. :D Much more so than any of the 12" subs in this price range.

The room does open into our kitchen and a hallway. My primary concern is the tv room but if we factor the kitchen into the equation 17x13x9 then we can add another 1900 cubic feet which puts us around 3700ish and then if I factor the hall way that will put us at a total of 4200 cubic feet of space to cover. I will look into the VTF-3. Hsu is local to me, roughly 30 minutes away. I might make a sketch and head down there, it appears they have an end of summer sale going on.

HSU has a demo showroom, so with you being close I would call them and set up a time to go by there and check out their subs first hand. Also, drive a vehicle that will haul two large subs, because you'll probably want to take a pair home. :D

Oh man, you should have said that, go listen to the VTF2 and 3 and see what you think!
