Sub shopping - any way to find out what Hz the music I listen to goes to?

1073 Views 16 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Kothoga
Hey all. I just moved into a house with a very large room where my sub will be, so I'm shopping to replace my SVS SB12-NSD which was antastic for my condo

I listen to 90% EDM music, focusing on dubstep and trap. In the EDM world they just call it bass music - lots and lots of bass.

Is there any way to figure out what some of these tracks extend down to? Like a program I can run the song through from iTunes or something that tells me the dynamic range of some of the heavier stuff?

Reason I ask is I don't know if I need a sub that reliably extends down to 10 Hz or so if all of the music I listen to bottoms out at 20 or 30 or something.

I do watch movies 30-40% of the time, so the extension wouldn't be wasted, but mainly I'm listening to bass music.

Thanks in advance

I could be wrong but I believe most EDM drops down to 20Hz. That said, you'll want to look at more than just how low a sub is listed as going. You'll want to concentrate on its output at that frequency.

For example, a JTR tuned to 10Hz will still pummel you at 20Hz with 120dbls where as a SVS might do 90dbls at 20Hz.
Yep, roger that. Figured I’d see how far I need to extend first and then worry about output.

Also need to get my room measured. I imagine it will fall in the extreme category as it’s an open floor plan. Will likely need two subs
Glad i'm not the only one who loves that deep bass extension in EDM. I have a PB 3000 and it works quite well for my music tastes and space

I'm counting down the days to Lost Lands if that gives you an idea ;)

Provide a budget and you will get suggestions that fall near that budget. I recommend PSA, very happy with my PSA subs, a pair of S1811 subs (They have been replaced with S1812), but for a large space I would recommend ported subs.

Budget is $2-3000. I'll make a separate thread for when I get to actually shopping. This thread is mainly for getting the data on my music.

Have looked at SVS, PSA (tv1512) and Rhythmic. Have an SVS on the way right now to get a baseline

Oh man i am super jealous! Anyone in particular you're looking forward to? I'm just glad they upload quality sets so i can enjoy them on my system at home :)

My 2 cents would be to check out PSA subs... i wish i had saved a bit more and got the V18 (ipal or non ipal). That's my next upgrade at some point (or the TV2112 if i save a bit longer)

I have edm songs that hits the 10 range (soundcloud baby! some great stuff there) There are some songs with some awesome transients that hit crazy deep.
Unfortunatly there is no real way to quantify what frequencies you get to without talking to the engineer/producer/artists or testing gear and room response to verify response.

How much time do you have? Besides X:

NGHTMRE for sure. He's my favorite and I haven't seen him since 03/2020. He came to TX in July but I missed him because my GF was recovering from a brutal tonsilectomy.

BTSM, Peekaboo, GJones, G Rex, Liquid Stranger, Lucii, LSDream, SvddenDeath (VOYD!!), Subtronics, Sullivan King etc.

I'm dreading the stage conflicts

Wow, those are some of my favorite artists too! We have very similar tastes. Liquid Stranger is probably my all time favorite out of that list. But after seeing LSDream's live sets this past year i would make sure to see him live

I would also add that you should definitely check out Ganja White Night, they are killer live

Honestly I thought Liquid Stranger outdid X at Thunderdome last year. Love GWN, saw him at Ubbi Dubbi '19.

Freaking missed LSDream at Ubbi this year - def catching him
Randomly listened to some Billie Eilish after receiving my tv2112s. She uses lots of pretty low bass in her stuff (like “xanny”). Previous listenings were with far less capable subwoofers and the difference between the two was night and day.

That being said, I’d think you’d be completely fine if you got something that could get down to 20hz easily. I think the further extension into sub 20hz would be better for movies, but I wouldn’t doubt if some of the edm stuff has some sub 20hz mixed in, albeit rare.

Get a Umik and download free REW software. Use the real time analyzer while you're listening and you can see exactly what's going on.
If you're going to be making a serious sub investment down the road REW will be useful then anyhow.
I know you can analyze the frequency response of tracks in Audacity and/or BEQ Designer....however, I cannot tell you exactly how since I've never done it myself. Ask the guys in the BEQ thread, they'll for sure know.
With that budget, PSA is the way to go. The TV2112 uses an Italian made pro tour grade driver used in massive concert arrays and will absolutely destroy and spit on the little SVS Chinese offerings.

Another option for even more output in that budget would be two DIY 21" Devastators using the NSW pro tour driver. These would allow for some rib cracking midbass along with a 16Hz tune.
