Sub surrounds or new avr

1215 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  mhsens
I have about 1000 dollar budget to upgrade the audio in my home theater. I currently have:

Ps3 for bluray output

Onkyo 801 AVR

Polk tower speakers and 4 satellite surrounds

Polk 300w sub

What would be the best use of the budget right now.

A. upgrade to a hdmi AVR to be able to decode the hd codecs

B. Add a second sub and bookshelf surrounds

C. Spend all on surrounds

D. Spend all of it on a second sub.

Room is about 23X13 but open into an area that is about16X16.

Sounds and bass are currently pretty good but when I go for broke it comes up a little weak.

Surrounds appear to be a bit overwhelmed by the fronts.

Thanks,

Frank

Any opinions on this...are the new hd codecs a more worthy upgrade right now?

Thanks
which Polk speakers - model #'s ?

All the rest is "plumbing" if your speakers aren't the best you can afford.
RTi100s for the fronts

RM 7200 system for the surrounds, center and sub...

Thanks
could just be an equalization issue. invest in a HD calibration DVD and work on the menu setup in your 801. If you can't get the system to balance out like you would like, then consider some physical changes to the speakers or AVR

Good advice.

What is you listening mode? HT / Music

Surrounds are not intended to compete with the mains.

If you decide to upgrade consider new mains.

Do you have a center?

Why would he need to replace the excellent RTi100?

If anything I would invest into a matching center (CSi40, anyone?) and a better sub.

The mains overpowering the surrounds also seems like a calibration issue to me.

My center is part of the rm set. I i recalibrated and it does seem a bit better but I'd like more power out of my surrounds..

So would you go new surrounds and a new sub or new surrounds and upgrade to the 805 for the hd codecs?

Well, so it seems you want fuller sound from your surrounds since the 3.5" drivers just cannot keep up with your fronts. Try pushing them maybe another 2-3 dB higher. Have you calibrated by ear or with an SPL meter?

To get more from the surrounds you want larger matching RTi or FXis for at least your side speakers, but then you'll start looking for a better center, too; at least that was my experience.

The rti28 and rti38, and fxi30 and fxi50 are from the same series as your fronts if I am not mistaken, and rt25i and rt35i are also very close, but were made in much larger quantities than the rti28/38, which succeeded them.

Whether to upgrade the sub or the receiver is a personal preference. Do you have a need for the new features of the 805? I was perfectly happy with my $500 200W Mirage S10 until I heard the Bob Carver's Sunfire and Definitive Tech SuperCube subs. Both are similar in design, and are just amazing for either clean music bottom end or sheer boom-factor with movies, but cost at least $1K.

I don't see how DolbyTruHD would address those issues. More detail perhaps.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "weak", but I interpret that as meaning you want more fullness, more bass. Better subwoofer perhaps. I vote with the majority on the surround issue. Try calibration, location, angle first. Raise the crossover point so that surround can handle more, and so that receiver's amp isn't taxed as much in driving surrounds. Try this first since free. If still no good, get new surrounds.
