I agree. Low frequencies have long wavelengths that essentially ignore any object in a room and the room itself so you can get away with just one sub. FYI an 80Hz wavelength is about 14 feet peak to peak.
A good rule of thumb for speaker design is speakers become directional when the wavelength is less than or equal to the cone diameter. So an 8" woofer is good to about 1700Hz.
