Does the shape of a sub box matter much as long as the internal volume is proper for the design and, if ported, there is adequate internal port clearance, etc.?

I have a pair of the ACI SV12 drivers and want to build a pair of sub/bass modules (~80Hz and down) to use as bases for some 3-way monitors I have. Ideally, the height of these modules would place the tweeters of the monitors at about ear level when seated. So, the boxes would tend to be taller rather than the typical short, squat sub enclosure.

Any problems there?

It can matter like in a recent test with some 6 foot sonotubes but it probably wont with units half that size. Also you probably dont want to put a sub in a speaker stand in many cases since you generally dont put stands in places conducive to boundary gain. If you can make use of free dB, why not use it?

The boundary gain thing is an excellent point. These are not intended at all for getting "cranky", just a good solid fill in for that lower octave or two on a 2-ch music system.

Hmmm...more to consider.
