Subwoofer for 3400 cu-ft room

1497 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  ack_bk
I'm in search of advice for a reasonably-priced subwoofer for a relatively large room.

I recently moved from an apartment, where my SVS SB10-NSD filled my 1500 cubic foot room just fine, to a house, where the sub isn't doing so well in my 3400 cubic foot room.

Does anybody have recommendations for a good sub for this room? I have the following restrictions:

1. Price: I'd prefer to not go above $800

2. Number: I don't think my wife would tolerate multiple subs

3. Function: The sub would be used for roughly 50% music and 50% home theater. I care more about musicality than pure depth/loudness.

4. Appearance: This will be tucked in a corner behind a chair, so I think I won't be restricted too much in the appearance.

thats a pretty big room to fill it with bass...you might have to up ur budget..or maybe consider two subs as with a larger room obtaining a linear bass response would be a challenge...unless you plan to sit in specific places only

Rythmik is known to make pretty good tight musical subs that also go pretty low performing well with movies

here is one...

I'd suggest a Chase Home Theater 18" sealed sub with a Dayton amp. Right now the older models are on sale for $700. That's a lot of bang for the buck.

I have a similarly-sized room (~3,375 cu.ft.) and I found that going from a single sub (SVS PB12-NSD) to duals (CHT SS-18.T) made a noticeable difference in performance.

If your floor is concrete (like mine), you may find a single, $800 sub to be a little lacking. However, if you must go single, consider upping your budget and getting something like the Rythmik FV15HP, or a CHT SS-18.2.
Would something like an Epik Empire or a Hsu VTF-3 work? Or are they not powerful enough?

You could certainly buy one now and add a second down the road if it did not meet your needs. With your room, you may benefit from multiple subs.
