Just finished a new basement HT and my existing 7.1 setup needs a subwoofer makeover.

- ~380 sq.ft. / ~3050 cu.ft./, “L” shaped basement HT, with projection screen, mains, center and sub near the corner of the L.

- Using a Velodyne SPL-1000 II currently, with an Integra DHC-80.2 preamp, Parasound 5250 amps, Monitor Audio GR 60’s, LCR and GSFXs.

- 60/40 movies/music

The SPLII does well at mid-volume with clean musical bass, but struggles with louder movie tracks in the new space. WAF precludes house shaking sound, but I still want smooth, loud(er), and accurate bass.

Budget is ~$1k for sub “improvement”.

Questions:

1) One or two subs (leaning towards 2, particularly for an odd shaped room with challenging response characteristics)? I’m also working on bass traps and treatments.

2) Replace the SPL II or try to add a used one? Are there any current models that might be a good match (Velo Optimum 10”)? Not sure I want to go with 2x 10” subs . . .

3) For new subs, was looking at:

- Dayton Audio kits: T1504K, RS1202K

- PSA XS30

- FV15HP

- Other suggestions?

4) Ported or sealed (leaning towards sealed from experience, but open minded)?

Lots of questions, all advice welcome.

Define the kind of sound you want from a sub

Primary goal - musical, fast and clean bass at 40-100 Hz at mid-to-reference levels, and can produce a tactile response at 10-20Hz for reference level movie tracks within a 3000 cu ft. (treated) room. Trying to avoid the "bloat" I hear from the current SPL II when pushed in terms of volume or depth.

Dual Rythmik FV15HP (1 port / 14Hz extension mode / rumble filter off / high damping) would be my pick in your shoes. Dual SVS PB13 Ultra will yield similar performance in movies but at higher cost, so no need going that route IMO.

I like big and hard hitting chest slam response in a sub. I found Rythmik FV15HP to be a bit laid back on this account. You can audition in your room before finally making up your mind. DIY is another option and you can build your own sub(s) as per your liking.

Thanks. Any view of dual SVS PB2000s? The Ultra 13s might break the budget too much.

I have both dual PB 1000's and dual PB 2000's for a few days now. I have them in either corner of my room up front with

the PB1000's stacked on top of the PB 2000's and my mains on top of that.

My room is 4k Cu Ft . Both dual sub option will do great in your room. And with SVS's 45 day in home trail with no cost for return shipping you cant go wrong

Getting the PB 1000's and then if you want more oompf get the dual PB 2000's.

One other option if you have room up front and how your wiring is set up and equipment placement you could get the dual PB 1000's and then run the center

line level out from your processor either split or returning from your Velodyne to the Pre Pro. If you have the amps up front it makes it easier. If not and your sub has High level speaker ins and out you can use those for the center channel speaker. This will give you true full range center "speaker" , but the speakers you have go pretty low not sure of the +/- db they have so the velo might help them out. or throw it into the rear channels.

Sounds like an interesting setup idea. Wouldn't getting another GR60 (full range) speaker be easier for the center channel, rather than trying to split the signal to the GRLCR and Velodyne?

I think I'm gonna demo the PB13 Ultra (just one) and a pair of either SB or PB-2000s. I'd like to demo the FV15HP, but the shipping costs make that a prohibitive venture. . .

Talked to SVS (very helpful). Went with a pair of PB-2000s, which seemed to be the right mix of 2 subs, good performance and price point. Will report back.
