A have a large SVS sub (something like 16" wide by 24" deep etc..), and am looking for placement options. I'm re-doing the electric fireplace insert (removing the fireplace, putting in A/V shelves etc..) , and installing recessed shelves between the studs etc..

The studs are only 12" apart, so placing the sub on a bottom shelve between the studs won't work. The cavity resulting from the fireplace removal is quite large, and would more than accommodate the sub.

But *can* I hide the sub in this enclosure and still hear/feel the effects of the subwoofer? Or does the speaker grill of the sub need to be "open" to the rest of the room?
