I've definitely heard of moving your subwoofer around your listening room to find the best sounding location.

Has anyone ever heard of first placing the subwoofer in the location which you will be listening from (seating location). Then walk around the room until you find a spot where the subwoofer subwoofer sounds the best, then place the subwoofer at that location.

Sounds logical and crazy to me at the same time.

I have has used this method to try to find the flattest frequency response and works pretty well. Most seem to recommend crawling (thus, the crawl test).

Nearfield placement increases volume but increases localization. Locatinig the sub near the soundfield (where the fronts and center) reduces this and allows a higher cross over freq if you have small fronts without you noticing where the sub is.

Yes, but its best done using a SPL meter and place the sub at the location of the highest meter reading.

I don't think the OP is considering nearfield position. He is referring to a technique of placing the the subwoofer at the seating position, and crawl around the floor in his room while a bass-heavy CD is playing to find optimal placement.

Audioholics has a nice link regarding the crawl test:
