Subwoofer suggestions for pairing with Klipsch Synergy components

1756 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  BeeMan458

Up until recently, I was running a Mirage Nanosat 5.1 system, with two extra Nanosats being used for the surround back channels, and an Omnisat V2 CC instead of the standard Nanosat CC.  I recently purchased a pair of Klipsch Synergy F-10 floorstanding speakers for my front left and right channels, and plan on converting the system over to a full Klipsch Synergy system in the near future (likely replacing my current CC with the Synergy C-20, and then later on replacing the surrounds with S-20's as my budget allows.  At the moment, I'm trying to determine what the best subwoofer for this system would be.

I've read positive reviews on both the Klipsch Sub-12HG (currently 199.99 on Amazon), as well as the BIC America F12 (~193 on Amazon).  The Klipsch SW-350 looks pretty nice, but it's a tad more than I'd like to spend.  Both subs are 12" woofers, but the Klipsch is rated at 300W RMS/650W peak, while the BIC is rated for 150W RMS/475W peak.  Both of these models use BASH amplifiers.  Any suggestions and/or constructive criticism is appreciated.

If you are set on Klipsch, get the SW 450 or the SW 115. There is a good chance that getting a lesser sub will have you looking for another sub 6 months from now.

OP....if you can up the ante for SW115, PSA XV15 will murder that sub for that kind of money. Rythmik LV12R at lesser price is another option. SVS also has great offerings in that price range.
All good advice. OP look at Internet Direct sub companies such as: SVS, PSA, Hsu, Rythmik, Outlaw. With internet direct companies they don't need to pay a middle man and they are companies who specalize in subs, you get the most bang for the buck from them. I have dual Outlaw Audio LFM-1 Plus subs that I got on sale for $998 shipped for both. For me to go to a brick and mortor store and buy anything that would even come close to competing I would have to spend $1000 or more on each sub.

Ouch... checked Amazon today and it looks like the Sub-12HG is back up to 339.95.  I'm not set on a Klipsch product, I just want something that will complement the speakers I have (or will be acquiring soon).  I see that the PSA XV15 is highly regarded by many on these forums, but the only seller I've been able to find is direct from PSA for $799, which is way more than I planned on spending.  I have a relatively small home theater area (don't have exact dimensions at the moment), so I don't need a ton of power.  Just looking for a well built, quality subwoofer that will last.  I'd prefer to stay under $400, unless the difference is that significant.  How is the Klipsch SW-350?
The differences are HUGE between Klipsch and any other brick and mortor store subs compared to Internet Direct (ID) sub companies. And yes the only way you can buy a new PSA XV-15 is from PSA, hence the name internet direct.... Normally "good" subs start around $500 each. SVS PB1000 is basically the best sub to be had @ $499 shipped at its normal price. Reaction Audio is a new internet direct company you could check out their BPS 212 for $400 shipped or the BPS 212 Turbo for $500 shipped. I don't want to make you spend more than what you have but trust me on this it is way wiser to spend $400 to $600 on a good sub from an ID company than it is to spend $300 to $400 on other subs. As it will be cheaper in the long run cuz you won't wanna upgrade right away.

Here is my advice, with a brief explanation:

In order to get a true hometheater subwoofer, with relatively flat extension down to 20Hz, the starting price point is $500.  This would be, imo, the SVS PB-1000 for $499 shipped.  You may find it on their outlet page for $449 as many are upgrading due to the release of a new model of one of their larger subs.  If you can stretch the budget, this will be a large improvement over pretty much anything available under $500.

My advice would be if you cannot stretch the budget that much, go with the best HSU sub you can afford within your budget.  I think they are the best under $500 subs out there.

The reaction audio dual 12" sealed sub for $399 was mentioned, and would be a good option only if you have a small room.  If not stick to ported subs.

Just looking for a well built, quality subwoofer that will last.

That costs money, which you are not willing to spend. This will hurt you in the longer run.

Apparently I know little to nothing about home audio subwoofers.  I am willing to spend the money for a quality sub, I'm just experiencing a bit of sticker shock, as I had no idea that they were so expensive; honestly, the subwoofer has always been an afterthought for me.  Now that I'm a little more up to speed, I don't mind paying a bit more if it means I'm going to get an excellent product that will last 10+ years.

This is the first time that I've heard of most of these companies, as I'm more familiar with the retail brands.  So... right now the SVS PB-1000 looks like the leading contender.  I'll have to read up on it, but from what you guys are telling me, I'm not going to find a better sub for the price.  braveheart123, I never said I'm not willing to spend the money; frankly, I just didn't think that such a high-end subwoofer was necessary.  In any case, I appreciate the guidance!

As you delve in and learn more about audio and subs, you will realize that making sound 80 Hz and up is relatively easy compared to making sound 80Hz and lower.  So having a sub that plays with authority down to 20 Hz requires exponentially more power and quality.  The benefit of splurging in this area is that it of course frees up your amplifier/avr/main speakers and allows them to focus on frequencies that are not as demanding to produce, so it ends up being a huge overall upgrade to your system, and is money well spent.  I think you are on the right track with the PB1000.

Also, what are the dimensions of your room?  L x W x H to calculate the volume of your room in cubic feet will also help to determine how effective the PB1000 will be for your application. Dont't forget to mention openings to other rooms, including whether they are large openings or just doorways, etc.

First things first, please look to my signatures to know where I'm coming from. That would be helpful for "I am not the voice of reason."

When I started my subwoofer journey, I had what I thought to be a reasonable budget of six hundred USDs but if forced, I was willing to go to nine hundred USDs.

The reason I came to this forum was because in truth, I was totally clueless about subs and I thought everybody here was nuts and to get where we all wanted to go, I had to spend an insane amount of money. Well, according to many, I'm still clueless. As to everybody's state of mental health, that's up for healthy debate. And to get to where I wanted to go, just recently, I had to spend what I considered to be an insane amount of money. The point, hanging out here, doesn't cure anything, won't save you any money (but you will find the best deal), makes one more accepting of insanity and spending an insane amount of money to get where you truly want to go. And expectedly, you will get worn down to the truth of it all and like the Borg, you will be assimilated.

Welcome to AVS and the subwoofer forum....."Hotel California."

Pretty much, everybody here has good information to share and it's going take a bit to wrap your think around subwoofers and price/performance. My recommendation, don't be in a hurry and enjoy the ride like going through a well lite subterranean cave. Something to be enjoyed as the trip progresses. As a suggestion, look to the budget minded subwoofer threads. Lots of good information and recommendations.

(okay, that's a gentle as I can be)

Your journey is a common one for many people who get into home audio, they just don't realize how much good bass will cost them. The problem with bass is it's a tricky thing to get right. But I can honestly tell you that the guys here are not trying to get you to waste your money, in fact they are trying to make sure you don't waste your money.

Because there is a good chance that if you buy a cheaper subwoofer that doesn't meet your expectations than in a year or so you will buy a different slightly more expensive subwoofer still chasing the same expectations and still not achieving them. Then finally, after wasting money on lesser subwoofers you will buy a good sub from PSA. SVS, HSU or Rythmik and you will finally realize your expectations.

Why do I think this will happen? Because it has happened to many many of us. I finally bought a PSA XV15 after years of lesser subs and all I can say is I wish I had done it seven years ago. It's the greatest purchase I ever made for my HT. There is no comparing great bass with mediocre bass and great bass is worth the extra cost. And if you have to then I strongly advise saving up a little longer and buying a subwoofer that will deliver great bass. Because great bass is THAT good!
