Subwoofer with Sennheiser Ambeo in 886sqft apartment. Floorplan included.

Hi all!

I recently downsized my speaker system in preparation for moving into an apartment due to relocating for a job. I don't want to buy a house in this market, but I do consider this a temporary situation, but at least a year.

I bought the Sennheiser Ambeo soundbar as a replacement, and thus far, it is fantastic as far as the sound stage and Atmos effects goes, but it is obviously missing all the low end. Fortunately, it does have a sub out.

The problem is the apartment. I am on the top floor so no one above me, but will have people below me, so the answer may be "no sub is recommended," but I'm looking for other experiences and recommendations from people living in apartments with sub. I don't want to be a nuisance if it's even possible with a sub. It is a stick built apartment building.

At this point I'm looking to just fill in the low end, I'm not looking for thunderous bass that punches me in the chest or fully pressurizes the space.

Any recommendations, including skipping the sub for now, would be appreciated.

Here's the floor plans. It will be laid out basically how shown in the plan.

This is one of the rare circumstances (for this forum) where something like the SVS Micro would make a lot of sense. A dual opposed sealed design will reduce a lot of sympathetic vibration and you aren't really looking for sub 30 hz output (which tends to be the most disturbing for neighbors).

It's been a long time since I've looked at what's available so first I'm hearing of the micro. I'll give it a look. Thank you!
I would also explore the option of Sonos arc with sonos ones as surrounds and a sonos sub. I was looking at the ambeo and ended up going sonos and dont find it lacking in any capacity

He already has the Ambeo if I read correctly

That's a huge room TBH. I saw someone complaining about PB 1000 in Ambeo not being "good enough." Since you have to rely on Ambeo's calibration rules, if I were you I'd definitely consider something like Monolith 10...

Ah you are right - I missed it.

Yep- Or a SB4000, or SB13U if you can find one used
Tactile transducers (Crowson, Buttkicker, Boss/Hover Boss, etc.) FTW! ;)

It's out of stock right now apparently, but I also have to weight the concern of disturbing neighbors. I recognize that that means that whatever I choose may not be "good enough" for the time being, but it will likely be better than nothing. At least I hope.

I can get a micro 3000 here by Saturday to try out in my old space which is just as big but with a vaulted ceiling. I figured what the heck, might as well see how it does in this space before moving to the new and if it just isn't "good enough," send it back. It will be a data point.

I think that's a good approach. Try something to see if it will be enough for your expected needs and return if it doesn't. Under different circumstances than what you present, I would definitely recommend larger for the size of space, but this way you have an idea of what you may be dealing with.

Ditto trying the micro 3000. In addition to being a dual-opposed sealed design (i.e. very low vibrations) it also comes with an app that gives you deep controls over the sub so that you won't be dependent on the Ambeo's limited sub controls.
Also, since your in an apartment and your goal isn't pounding, chest thumping sub-bass frequencies the micro 3000 should likely be fine. Another benefit of the dual-opposed sealed design, i.e. two drivers, is that it punches a little above its weight/size.

Re placement ... for work-location reasons I lived in apartments for several years and found the following helpful ...
First I made friends with the tenants below and next to me (on the sub wall side) so that I could get their feedback while testing where to put the sub.
I found three consistent trends/variables re sound/pressure bleed into neighboring apartments ...
  • In some buildings putting the sub in a corner helped, in others it made it worse.
  • In some buildings put the sub mid-wall helped, in others it made it worse.
  • In some buildings putting the sub on an outside wall/corner helped, in others it made it worse.
The good news is that in every apartment playing with those three variables allowed me to find an optimal sub location for neighbors (fyi the differences were always obvious).

Good luck!

Thank you very much for the info and tips!
If the micro 3000 doesn't work out, consider the SVS SB-1000 Pro, it's still small, and cost a lot less than the micro 3000.
There's also the Rythmik L12 at a little over 14" square for $590. It's the biggest, and heaviest of the 3, but still cost less than the SVS micro 3000.

I believe the SVS SB-1000 Pro has the same app and controls (EQ, room correction, etc.) as the Micro 3000.

I love Rythmik subs but in this situation (connecting to a soundbar instead of a full featured AVR) the extra controls that come with the SVS subs might be a better fit. Without an AVR it would be difficult to customize or tame the output of the Rythmik sub.

Imo, you should order a sb1000 pro to, and compare it with the micro 3000. Worse case, they both sound the same and you sent back the micro and save about $300. 🤔...😉
This will be the best way to find out if the micro is really worth the extra $300.

I purchased the SVS 3000 MICRO and in my opinion it is a perfect match with the AMBEO Soundbar.

Did you have any problems calibrating? Mine refused to calibrate at all until I reset everything, reinstalled the app, and unplugged the ambeo for 10 minutes.

Then it would pass, but the sub showed "not calibrated" in the app and the ambeo sounded horrid.

Removed the sub then the Ambeo calibrated fine again.

I have no problem calibrating the SVS 3000 MICRO with the AMBEO Soundbar.
The only change I did was to set the crossover frequency of the SVS to MAX on the SVS app and the calibration was detectable and calibrated.

Thank you. I exchanged my Ambeo for a new one and will see if I have better success calibrating a sub with it.

I'd like to hear any updates thoughts on the Micro 3000 with the AMBEO. This is what I am considering for an RV/Fifth wheel and a 55" G2 Oled.
