Subwoofers you can FEEL!

4902 Views 49 Replies 27 Participants Last post by  hdmi4ever
I am creating a new HT system with the following components:

Onkyo Receiver: TX-SR875

BA HS460 L/R, HS60 Surrounds and center? I want a really good center cuz I am partially deaf Was thinking of going with the TSS4000 center?

I want a really good sub that will allow me to FEEL the action. If a jet flies over? feel it rumble!

My room is 13X18X8

I LOVE bass! I listen to all types of music from classical to hip hop/dance mixes.

I can get a discount on JBL, MTX, Boston Accoustics, Denon, Infinity/Harmon, Yamaha and a few others.

What subs would you recommend? I can spend up to $1000, but less is preferred.

I was looking at the Infinity TSS-SUB4000 or PS212, BA HPS12HO but really haven't a clue.

Also if you know of a receiver that compares with the TX875, for less? I like it because it has a lot of inputs, has 3 HDMI in and 1 out and seems to be current with technology.

I know getting a discount is really nice but sometimes you can still get more for your money by going with an ID (Internet Direct) company (depending on the discount that you can get
). You should check out SVS or HSU (You can search for them on this site). For $1000 you can definitely get a sub that you will FEEL, but when comparing SVS or HSU to the brands you mentioned above.. I think the SVS and HSU would be a better way to go.

Right now the Plus/2 is on sale for 1099... that will definitely rock your world!!

Also, how much are you getting the TX875 (Onkyo?) for?

Plus/2....100% for the price it is at right now. Wait til you FEEL that monster!
I'll throw another plug for the ID companies of SVS and HSU. I have a SVS PB-2isd (not sure what it's called now) and I can feel it. I've read a lot of good things about HSU too so I wouldn't count them out either and for $1000 you will get something from either of those companies that will rock your room.
I forgot to mention.. I have the SVS PB13-Ultra (glossy black) and I just LOVE it.. That thing hits!!! (but that is out of your range).. the Plus/2 is also a MONSTER! That is the unit that got me hooked on SVS. I had a demo at a friends house with the Plus/2 and I never looked back

Do you have a certain decor you need to match?? because for a grand i would seriously recommend looking into the Epic and eD options...if you can wait for eD (elemental designs) then that would be my best bet....im running two 18's and my eyes can feel like they are popping out of my head if i wanted them to...they just make an amazingly awesome product for the money and i know Epic has gotten a lot of praise too....just my thoughts
you should do well with a sub below a grand and have quite an improvement!

Most of those brands I get 50-60% off so that is why I asked.

I prefer to actually spend $500 or $600 and with the discount thats about what it ends up being.

I can get the 875 for $1022

What if I got two subs? The 875 only has one sub out, so how would I add two?

Some subs have a sub in/sub out on them so they can be daisy chained. You could also just use a splitter. At your price range I think the Epik Knight and the new MFW-15 are going to be your best bets.
Just get an epik/ed sub (or the mwf-15 if its truly that great) , the other stuff is still not worth it even with those discounts. You have to realize that consumer brands sell junk in comparison with what most people discuss on this forum.

Yep. I'm guessing based on your posts that you work at a big box retailer like BB, CC, etc. Pretty much any of the Epik, eD, SVS, Hsu subs that fit your budget will far outperform anything, ANYTHING, that you will find in your store, regardless of price.

+1

If you really want to impress your friends and yourself.. stick with the brands that OvalNut listed.. you can't go wrong with any of those brands... they will KILL anything put out by the brands you listed.

PS: you are really doing yourself a service by researching first before you buy... good job!

Do they go down into the 20s? What's recommended for say $600 delivered?
Epik Castle can hit 108.5db @ 20hz. It can easily hit 16-18hz usable output. For $600 delivered? Hsu VTF-2.2 or SVS PB-10NSD is all you're gonna be able to get.

For around 650-700 shipped you can get an Epik Knight which is the Castle's little brother.

See this post for lots of measurements and subjective rankings:

Yes, easily. They go below 20 and into the teens, with near flat response. That linearity of response all the way down low is a key aspect of this level of subwoofer which other brands you were asking about just cannot approach.

Any of the Epik, eD, SVS or Hsu subs within your price range are recommended. We've gotten you this far, now's your turn to do a little research on specific models:

Come on back with specific questions on models you saw in your price range that appeal to you, and we'll be able to really help you out.

Also, have you considered dropping down to the SR805 and saving $500? All you are losing is 10 watts per channel and a nicer upconverter.

Or an Epik Valor ( might be a tiny bit over 600), or eD a5s-350
SVS POWERED PC PLUS 25-31, CYLINDER SUB, 525 WATT

on ebay now. What do you think of this one?

^^that's the one he's talking about.

With 4 days left that's gonna be at least $5-600 by the time it ends (at $380 now). It looks like a nice sub, but it only goes to 25hz 3db. Not worth the money imo.
