Suggestion for new DVD player to play burned DVD+R discs?

1460 Views 10 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  rdgrimes
I need to replace a Samsung DVD player that refuses to play my burned DVD+R disc properly. Any suggestions on quality player that will play DVD+R trouble-free? I need a black finish to match my components.

Any of the Oppos.

Are you sure the discs are ok?

They play properly on an old Zenith in our guest bedroom.
I burn them frequently, have not found much rhyme or reason to one type over the other except that in cases like yours one or the other won't play. Sometimes I burn one and it will play ok on one machine but not another and yet a similar one plays fine on both. I think you can use any new player but the better players might be more forgiving and be more precise with the tracking, just a guess. Sony seems to tout high precision tracking on some of their better models.

Well I tried a Sony with no luck. What really bothers me is these discs will play on an old Zenith biut not on a new Samsung, Sony or my Panasonic Blu-ray player in our home theatre.

Any other suggestions?
I never had much luck with DVD+R's from the very beginning so I switched to all DVD-R's and have never had a problem since. Interestingly I do recall hearing one time that it was generally the cheaper players that could handle about anything while many of the more expensive models were the finicky one's when it came to the different formats.
I've done much research in this area and found that the Burner/ Media combo is the key to success. Some burners simply do awful with certain types of media. Some love +R yet may hate -R, or vice versa.

You can try various media with your particular burner, then score the Burn Quality. Stick with the brand and type that works well with your particular burner. I have found that Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden yield the best results. I also use +R for my important material, as they seem to always give superior burns and rate the highest scores.

This program is a must for finding the right Burner/Media combo, and it is free: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/

My Oppo 983, Toshiba XA2 and Pioneer players play all of my home-burned media without any issues.

Best of luck!

I second that. The media/burner combo seems to be the biggest issue than the player issue. I'll also mention that I've had trouble finding any media other than Ritek. The Sony, Memorex and GQ discs that I've tried have all turned out to actually be Ritek media.

The other factors that I've found important to getting good burns is to burn at a relatively slow speed like 2.4x or 4x. And to leave a little space at the end of the disc. About 100-200 MB of free space seems to help avoid skipping problems at the end of the disc.
Until proven otherwise, it should be assumed that this sort of a problem is due to poor burn quality on the DVD. Failing to play in multiple players is a sure sign.

Classic symptoms of poor burns would be that the disc mounts and starts playing normally, then progressively gets worse until it stops playing. Failing to load at all can sometimes be due to a finicky player, but not always. Generally, poorly burned discs have acceptable quality in the first 25% (inner) part of the disc then deteriorate, but this is not always the case. With some burners and media, the first 25% can be the worst.

Switching to Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media and burning at 1/2 rated speed is the best place to start. If your burner is older, and rated for less than 16x burn speeds, replace it because it does not have proper firmware support for newer 16x media.
