Suggestions for Air Duct Noise Control

306 Views 1 Reply 2 Participants Last post by  mbgonzomd
I'm finishing my basement this weekend & have everything in line regarding my HT & reducing noise transmission except my air ducts. I've spent more than I originally intended & am looking for suggestions on the best way at the best price to keep the sounds from my HT downstairs & reduce the sound traveling through the air ducts from downstairs up.

I realize that this is tough to do & placement of the air ducts are key, but I have to put some in the HT area for air & was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to reduce the noise from traveling throughout my air ducts in a decent price range.

Thanks!

Here are some suggestion that I have read:

1) Build 90 degree angles into the duct. Typically with duct board. These angles will decrease noise moving through the ducts, but also increase the resistance for airflow. Thus possibly making your system have to work a little harder and increasing your bill a little. Both are probably negligable with only a turn or two.

2) Insulate existing ducts and plenums

3) Use an over sized grill for vents/returns to decrease air velocity and therfore airflow noise through the grill.
