Suggestions for inexpensive musical ceiling speakers

593 Views 13 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  jeepster
I am finishing my basement and plan to install 6 ceiling speakers to give good, consistent coverage.

Any suggestions on good, inexpensive ceiling speakers? They will mainly be used for background music. My main goals are decent frequency response and no harsh high-ends.

Thanks.

NXG - do a search on yahoo shopping and you'll be inundated with sources.

Decent speakers for the money, and very cheap.
For the absolute minimum budget basement solution, you can get six AudioSource IC6S ceiling speakers from Amazon.com for $162 ($54/pair). For about $20 extra, you can replace a pair of these with a pair of IC8S speakers for a bit better low end response.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Any thoughts about the speakers here http://www.htd.com/inspcoch.html I can go up to the AL-R80s if they are worth it.

Or, how about these MTX speakers available at Parts Express http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=302-038

I have no experience with in-ceiling speakers, but I would like decent low end response. Your comments please!
NXG makes a 10" in-ceiling. Want bottom end?...that one's got it in spades.
Mike -

What version do you have? The NXG-PRO80C looks nice. Any experience with it?
You want "good", you pay. But if you're willing to settle for "not terrible", then see above.

Yes, and they're suprisingly good. The crossovers are 12db slopes (not chintzy little 6db high pass nonsense), use air core inductors & film caps on the tweeter side, decent 'lytics & ferrite core inductors on the woofer side, but most of all, use pretty darn good quality woofers and tweeters. The performance far outpaces the money - that's why I recommend them for those on a tight budget. Haven't seen anything yet that can compete at that level of money. Now if you want better imaging and/or midrange quality for higher end HT, you can do better, but that's wasn't your goal was it? These are very well done budget speakers that also happen to really rock too.
Many thanks Mike - I understand the value of a good crossover and, obviously, quality drivers. This is great information. And you are correct, the goal is not higher-end HT - I am planning a dedicated Theater Room for that.

I have an email conversation going with HiFiForLess about these - they seem to be the major retailer. Any other retail suggestions, keeping the board rules in mind of course!
Yea, you might take a gander at proficient speakers - don't have any experience with them, but they seem pretty solid and are in the same price range as NXG.
 Ceiling Speakers

These ceiling speakers from Parts Express are supposed to be pretty decent, especially considering the price,
Mike - thanks, but what I was wondering was if you had any other suggestions, other than HiFiForLess, for online dealers for the NXG speakers.

jjdche - thanks, and please let me know what you think once you get these installed.

Can't recommend anyone specific, but here's a link to a yahoo shopping search:

If you're not comfortable with any of these outlets, I can supply you with what you need, but I'm not that competitive with some of these online sources on this product. However, I can match HiFiforless' price, no problem.
