Summary of current HDMI situation?

486 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  thylantyr
I find the whole HDMI issue very confusing, but from what I can tell, this is the current state (please correct where necessary):

1. Most/all of the compatibility problems current receivers have can be laid at the feet of the connected devices, not the receivers.

2. HDMI 1.3 isn't even defined yet, so there's no way it's going to be on the receivers debuting this summer/fall.

3. HDMI .2 won't decode DTSHD/DD+

4. 3. doesn't matter that much, because current receivers w/1.1 can receive the decoded bitstream from HDDVD players.

So what would the particular benefits of 1.2 over 1.1 be, and why does everyone make such a big deal about 1.3?

Thanks

Regarding your points, here's my understanding:

1. Don't know. This is the feeling I get reading all kinds of threads about hdmi issues.

2. Yep, 1.3 isn't defined yet. I don't see how any new electronics coming in fall would have this implemented.

3. HDMI isn't about decoding anything. It's just a transport protocol that can carry decoded audio for now, maybe un-encoded audio in the future.

4. The general feeling I got reading a variety of threads is that the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players will have chips in them to decode these new audio formats in the player and send them out decoded over HDMI.

The main benefit of 1.2 over 1.1 seems to be its' ability to send SACD signals. The first link I provided lists the benefits of 1.2

Why is it that I always seem to get the itch to upgrade my stuff at the worst possible times? I've got money just begging to be spent. So many scenarios have gone through my head, but it always comes down to too many unknowns right now to commit any serious money to an upgrade.

The one serious option I'm considering is an Anthem AVM50. At least when all the dust settles, I can upgrade the unit for any necessary upgrades at a reasonable cost. I'd certainly stay away from manufacturers that wouldn't offer this kind of upgrade option.

Ferret - in this thread where I asked questions similar to the OP's, an AVS Special Member opined that the AVM30 could not be upgraded to HDMI 1.3.

I remember reading that thread. The AVM30 won't be upgradeable to HDMI 1.3 via a firmware upgrade, but you can most likely sent it in to Anthem for them to do a hardware upgrade at a cost. They will apparantely be offering this kind of hardware upgrade for customers who want to go from the AVM30 to the 50.
Wait 10 years and the issues resolved. In the meantime, Margarita's for
