My faithful Sunfire True subwoofer has started acting up. The unit has developed high resistance across the speaker coil and is making the amp plate run hot. Does anyonee have a repair source for these? I haave an email in to Frank Malitz on this. Any other repair or replacement resources out there fore the 10" driver? This one on Parts Express seemed like a decent replacement with good reviews but apparently is no longeer in production:

Are there any others out there, repair or replacement that anyone has tried and can recommend?

sadly, you are out of luck... AFAIK, you cannot find replacement drivers for the Sunfires. The sub gotta be approaching 20 years old now. Time for a new one...

MikeTyler. I have a 20+ year old Sunfire amp in a 8 cubic foot ported box with 15" driver. The amp is still going strong. If you can contact a place that repairs Sunfire subwoofers, they might be able to tell you (based on Thiele/Small parameters) if there is a suitable replacement driver.

Jon S. Was your information from contacting an actual Sunfire source or some other suitable source of expertise? If you have more details, then you can more specifics to MikeTyler why he might not be able to get a suitable replacement driver.

I got the information from Rita's Vintage Audio repair who did Sunfire repairs... I believe Bob Carver was affiliated with that company as well after he sold Carver and Sunfire. That's why some owners bought the HiVi SP10 sub drivers from Parts Express as a substitute but apparently it was not a 100% match. Either way, the point is moot as the drivers are NLA.

Unfortunately, Rita's closed down last year but I understand one of the employees took over the business (Flannery's Vintage Audio Repair) with Bob's blessings but he only does repairs on the sub amps and receivers.

If you contact Sunfire directly, they will tell you that the components are no longer available but they will sell you a new sub at a discounted price.

I had my old original Sunfire True Subwoofer repaired this month by Bill and couldn't be happier. It was gathering dust with a very nasty hum that I could not get rid of. It's now working better than new. No more hum at all; just on-demand room shaking bass. Prices are on his website.

Sunfire Signature series TS EQ12 True Subwoofer

How much is my Sunfire Signature series TS EQ12 True Subwoofer worth? Mint condition, no packaging. Has been very reliable... gloss black with tuning microphone. I put it on CL for $1150 but I'm wondering if that is reasonable? I see a 10" version on fleabay for $1k???

Edit: even with the small size my wife is complaining about having a sub... I now have a dedicated theater room with two 8 cu ft enclosures as space is not a concern upstairs.

That's good to know. I have my True Sub MKII at a local shop right now. If they can't do anything with it, I'll consider Flannery's or Mr. Malitz. If I knew in advance that someone specialized in these, I may have gone there first. I have a new sub on the way, but if the price is right I might still fix the Sunfire to run duals (or at least see how two completely different kind of subs act together).

It's not exactly cheap, but the fix worked great and Bill stands behind his work. There's labor and hard-to-find parts involved. These Subs weren't cheap to begin with, so I guess it's all relative and cheaper than buying a new one. Besides Bill needs to eat too, so his time isn't free and I support small businesses.

Sorry I never updated this. I sent the amp to Flannery's Vintage Audio after my local shop checked it out and cleaned it up a bit without success. Flannery's did a super job with mine (also read great things about fmalitz). My True Sub has been purring (pounding?) right along like it was new. No hums, pops, or hissing. Since discovering newer higher end subs, maybe the money would have been better spent elsewhere, but since my True Sub has some sentimental value, it's all good. Good luck with 123ElectronicsRepair.

Help please....I have a local person selling a TS EQ 12 for $700. This is a pretty old sub and I cant afford to buy something that will break fast. Size does not matter to me. My main concern is how it will keep up with my pendragons. I was thinking about getting a Rythmik fv15hp. how does the sunfire compare to the rithmik? any advice. Also anyone knows about a screw in the passive driver to reinforce it? This sub has one in it.

Forget about it... The Sunfires have poor amp reliability. If there is a screw in the radiator, something is wrong...

I found that weird too. After all I called Eric at tekton and he is about to release a new monster(huge 39? 22x20)sub. 3 drivers . one 18 inch and 2 8inch, all active . I will give this a try.
