‘Superman & Lois’ TV Series Starring Tyler Hoechlin & Elizabeth Tulloch In The Works At The CW

The CW’s DC universe is eying another major expansion with Superman & Lois, a present-day drama based on the DC characters, starring Supergirl‘s Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as the iconic couple. The hourlong project, now in development, hails from The Flash executive producer Todd Helbing, DC Universe architect Greg Berlanti and Warner Bros. TV, where Helbing and Berlanti are under deals.

Written by Helbing, based on the DC characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman & Lois revolves around the world’s most famous Super Hero and comic books’ most famous journalist as they deal with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society.

Former Flash showrunner Helbing executive produces with Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Geoff Johns via Berlanti Productions.

With several DC series reaching maturity and the show that launched the CW universe, Arrow, in its final season, the network is stepping up its DC development efforts with two high-profile projects. Superman & Lois joins an Arrow spinoff headlined by the show’s Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy reprising their roles. It is set up as a backdoor pilot that will air as episode from the current eighth and final season of Arrow.

Superman & Lois is being developed as a standalone pilot and will not be introduced as a planted spinoff on one of the existing DC series on the CW. It marks a new stage in the DC franchise evolution on the CW as it features one of the most iconic DC characters, Superman.

Hoechlin has been portraying Clark Kent/Superman on the CW’s Arrowverse series since 2016, primarily on Supergirl. Tulloch was cast as Lois Lane last year when she appeared alongside Hoechlin’s Man of Steel in the 2018 Arrowverse crossover. She has since appeared as Lois Lane on Supergirl, The Flash and Batwoman. Both Hoechlin and Tulloch are set to reprise their roles in the upcoming big Arrowverse crossover event.

Tulloch previously starred as the female lead for six seasons on NBC’s Grimm. Her recent feature credits include Chronic, opposite Tim Roth, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
The Daily Planet tandem of Clark and Lois has been a foundation of the DC Comics mythology since the character got off the ground in the 1938 premiere issue of Action Comics.

The first television adaptation of a comic book arrived in 1952 with Adventures of Superman, which was sponsored by Kellogg’s became a signature first-run syndication success. George Reeves played the title hero while Phyllis Coates handled the Lois role for one season before Noel Neill stepped in.

The newsroom relationship was both revamped and vamped-up for Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, which aired for four seasons (1993-1997) on ABC and starred Teri Hatcher and Dean Cain. The series focused on the romantic tension between the two leads, then their courtship and deepening relationship.

WBTV had previously been working on a Superman prequel series, Metropolis, for DC Universe. The live-action series, from Gotham executive producers John Stephens and Danny Cannon, centers around Lois Lane and supervillain Lex Luthor.

‘Superman & Lois’ And ‘Walker, Texas Ranger’ Reboot With Jared Padalecki Get CW Series Orders

The CW is getting way ahead of the game for next season. After handing early renewals to all 13 of its current scripted series that are not ending this season, the network has given series pickups in lieu of pilot orders to two high-profile projects, Superman & Lois, starring Supergirl‘s Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as the iconic couple, and Walker, a reimagining of Walker, Texas Ranger, which is headlined by Jared Padalecki.

With several DC series reaching maturity and the show that launched the CW universe, Arrow, in its final season, the network has stepped up its DC development efforts with two high-profile projects, Superman & Lois and an Arrow backdoor spinoff headlined by the show’s Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy reprising their roles. That episode airs next week.
It is unclear how the series pickup of Superman & Lois would impact the Arrowverse pilot’s chances. I had heard chatter that the network may go with one new DC series for next year but a final decision will be made after the network executives review all their pilots.

Both Superman & Lois and Walker have been hot scripts garnering strong early buzz. Both projects are based on well known IP, have popular stars attached and proven auspices behind them — The Flash executive producer Todd Helbing and Greg Berlanti (Superman & Lois) and Anna Fricke and Dan Lin (Walker) — making the script-to-series orders a no-brainer. The two pickups also maintain the parity between the CW’s two sister studios — Superman & Lois comes from Warner Bros. TV, Walker is from CBS TV Studios. The network still is expected to order traditional pilots, likely four.

The pickup for Walker extends Padalecki’s stay at the CW and predecessor the WB, which he had called home for the past two decades with roles on Gilmore Girls and Supernatural.

Like the original series, created by Albert S. Ruddy & Leslie Greif, the reboot, in which Walker is getting a female partner, will explore morality, family, and rediscovering our lost common ground. It centers on Cordell Walker (Padalecki), a widower and father of two with his own moral code, who returns home to Austin after being undercover for two years, only to discover there’s harder work to be done at home. He’ll attempt to reconnect with his children, navigate clashes with his conservative family, and find unexpected common ground with his new partner (one of the first women in Texas Rangers’ history), while growing increasingly suspicious about the circumstances surrounding his wife’s death.

Texas native Padalecki reportedly had been looking for an opportunity to stay close to home for his next series and sparked to the idea of revisiting Walker, Texas Ranger. Walker is believed to be a straight reboot, in the vein of CBS’ Magnum PI and MacGyver, with a new incarnation of the beloved title character, played by Padalecki, vs. a sequel where the new lead is a descendant of the protagonist in the original series, who was played by Chuck Norris.

Padalecki and Fricke executive produce Walker with Rideback’s Lin and Lindsey Libertore for CBS Studios.

From the moment word of Walker got out, there had been great enthusiasm for the project at the CW where Supernatural has been an institution, with its stars Padalecki and Jensen Ackles revered by CW fans and enjoying a very close relationship with the network’s president and Supernatural superfan Mark Pedowitz.

As Supernatural is ending its 15-season run, Pedowitz had made it clear that the door at the network was wide open for the creative team and talent of the show to return anytime. “You will always have a home here, and you will always have a personal fan in me,” he said at TCA in August.

The CW has been high on reboots in the past few years with Charmed, Dynasty and Roswell. The original 1993 Walker, Texas Ranger aired on CBS for eight seasons and spawned a followup TV movie, the 2005 Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire.

Both Hoechlin and Tulloch are are reprising their roles in the big Arrowverse crossover event.

Here are the two newly picked up series’ official descriptions:

SUPERMAN & LOIS stars Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as the world’s most famous Super Hero and comic books’ most famous journalist as they deal with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society. Both Hoechlin and Tulloch have already appeared as these iconic characters in multiple episodes of The CW’s DC Super Hero series, including this season’s Crisis on Infinite Earths Crossover event, which concludes tonight. Based on the characters from DC created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, “SUPERMAN & LOIS” is written and executive produced by Todd Helbing (“The Flash”) and executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns. The series is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

WALKER, a reimagining of the long-running series “Walker, Texas Ranger,” stars Jared Padalecki as Cordell Walker, a widower and father of two with his own moral code, who returns home to Austin after being undercover for two years, only to discover there’s harder work to be done at home. He’ll attempt to reconnect with his children, navigate clashes with his family, and find unexpected common ground with his new partner (one of the first women in Texas Rangers’ history), while growing increasingly suspicious about the circumstances surrounding his wife’s death. “WALKER” is written and executive produced by Anna Fricke (“Being Human,” “Valor”), and executive produced by Dan Lin and Lindsay Liberatore and Jared Padalecki. “WALKER” is from CBS Television Studios in association with Rideback.

I wonder if they'll continue to undermine him on his own show. "I'd better call Supergirl to help me save the city. I just can't do it by myself, and she's so much stronger than I am..." :)

Of course not. This will be his story.
I just can’t help it, I just don’t like the actress playing Lois. Even when she was on Grimm.

Hoechlin is okay. He has the mild mannered reporter part down pat, but his demeanor doesn’t change when he’s in the super suit.
I think the problem was Grimm's writers moreso than Bitsie Tulloch.
Bitsie Tulloch (39) is seven years older than Tyler Hoechlin (32). Not to criticize Hollywood for giving a role to an older actress, but it's a peculiar casting choice. I don't care much for Tulloch's "Lois" from what I've seen in Supergirl. Just okay for me.
I think she has the Margot Kidder look... and, as far as her being older... I don't know if Lois is as much older as she is than Tyler... but if you think about it... Lois *should* be older than Superman. In all the traditional Superman lore, when Clark gets to Metropolis to start at the Daily Planet, Lois is a seasoned reporter who has won several major awards... that's part of why she dismisses Clark early on until he proves himself... so I feel like this pairing actually makes the characters work better in terms of adapting the classic Clark and Lois dynamic in the comics... You have Superman showing up and doing all these amazing things BUT you have Lois who is already a big name and super-confident by the time the Super-stuff starts happening... and it's how they can each maintain identities and be in a semi-equal relationship.
You can’t really tell that Tulloch is older than Hoechlin, so it doesn’t matter to me. Her character on Grimm could be part of why I don’t like her. I hate to sound shallow but it’s also her looks. It kind of looks like her jaw was broken and it never got set back properly or she’s sucking on a lemon drop.

And this new Lois and Clark are too lovey-dovey and cutie. At least from the Christopher Reeve Superman films, Lois was a strong-willed woman who never let anyone stop her from getting her way. Both the new L+C have no personalities other than “aren’t we the cute couple?”

Hopefully the new show will be better.

Not entirely related... but... there are some rumor mill churnings that Brandon Routh and a handful of others have been talking to DC about possibly doing a one-off series of his version of Superman. Maybe a 6-10 episode thing... could be for any of their networks... due to popularity and reception of his return to the role. Also, we know he will be available since he is being written off Legends this season. I have to say, I hope the rumor churning is true... would be nice to see more of Routh Superman. IF they are smart they could do more of these sorts of things too... with other characters, not necessarily even dopplegangers... but mini-series of various characters that they don't want to give a whole season or multiple seasons to... they could even do some crossovers this way too.

‘Superman & Lois’ Casts Couple’s Sons As Jordan Elsass & Alexander Garfin Join the CW Series

EXCLUSIVE: Meet Clark Kent and Lois Lane’s offspring. Jordan Elsass and Alexander Garfin will co-star opposite Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch in Superman & Lois, the CW’s straight-to-series drama about the iconic DC couple.

Elsass and Garfin will play Clark/Superman (Hoechlin) and Lois’ (Tulloch) teenage sons, Jonathan and Jordan, who are believed to be twins.

Elsass’ Jonathan is clean-cut, modest and kind-hearted, with an aw-shucks attitude that somehow doesn’t seem dated. Garfin’s Jordan is wildly intelligent, but his mercurial temperament and social anxiety limits his interactions with people, and consequently, Jordan prefers to spend most of his free time alone, playing video games.

Written by Helbing, based on the DC characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman & Lois revolves around superhero Superman and journalist Lois as they deal with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society.

Lois Lane’s pregnancy was revealed in last season’s Arrowverse crossover, Elseworlds. By the start of this season’s Crisis on Infinite Earths five-part event, the Kents were a family of three with the addition of their infant son, Jon. in Part 3 of Crisis, Lois, Clark and their baby were wiped out by the Anti-Monitor. The universe was eventually saved — and reset — with changes. They included Superman and Lois having two teenage boys in a post-Crisis world.

The development was revealed in the final Part 5 of of Crisis on Infinite Earths, which set up Superman & Lois. In it, Lois called Clark, asking him to get to Metropolis right away. “It’s the boys,” she said. “Your sons.”

While a surprise, the twist was not unprecedented; John Diggle and Lyla Michaels also ended up having two children vs. one prior to the events of Flashpoint.

Lois’ comments and leaked character descriptions for the sons in Superman & Lois triggered online speculation that the “sons” could be Superman’s child Jonathan and Bruce Wayne/Batman’s Damien Wayne, the central characters in the DC Comics series Super-Sons.

Former Flash showrunner Helbing executive produces Superman & Lois with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter via Berlanti Productions and Geoff Johns.

Elsass can next be seen in Hulu’s high-profile limited series Little Fires Everywhere opposite Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington, in which he plays Witherspoon’s eldest son and the love interest to Washington’s daughter (Lexi Underwood). He is repped by Paradigm, Kim Matuka and Schuller Talent and attorney Darren Trattner.

Garlin voiced Linus in The Peanuts Movie, earning an Annie Award nomination, and has appeared in two episodes of NBC’s Law & Order: SVU. He is repped by Jordan, Gill & Dornbaum and Nouveaux Talent Management.

Smallville Alum Kristin Kreuk: TV's New Lana Lang Sounds 'Awesome'

TV’s erstwhile Lana Lang is looking forward to passing the baton.

Smallville alum Kristin Kreuk, who currently headlines Burden of Truth, says she is excited to see what The CW’s Superman & Lois series does with the character of Lana, to be played by onetime Entourage member Emmanuelle Chriqui.

Ordered to series in January and set to air Tuesday nights after The Flash (starting in early 2021), Superman & Lois follows “the world’s most famous superhero and comic books’ most famous journalist (played by Supergirl’s Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch)” as they deal with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society.

Chriqui’s Lana Lang-Cushing, a loan officer at Smallville Bank, will re-establish her friendship with Clark Kent “during one of the most difficult periods in her life,” it was reported in April. Graceland‘s Erik Valdez will play Lana’s fire chief husband, Kyle Cushing.

The idea of seeing Lana’s legacy live on is “great,” Kreuk recently told TVLine. “I don’t know a ton about the show, but it sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun. She’s a great character, and with the freedom that’s afforded creators right now in regards to comic book characters, I think they can adjust and adapt her into a more modern position in the world.”

After all, now in her late 30s/early 40s, “I imagine that Lana is a very different character in a different universe,” Kreuk observed. “I am excited to… hear about how the show portrays her. She’s an interesting character in the canon, so having her be in a predominant role on this new show is awesome.”

As for Chriqui, Kreuk sounds like a bit of a superfan. “She’s wonderful, and very nice,” she effused of the casting choice. “I’m sure she’ll be fine.”

Kreuk added that while she no longer feels an “intense” tie to the Tom Welling-led Superman prequel series on which she was a series regular for seven out of 10 seasons, “It’s so fun to have Smallville get incorporated into the current comic book shows. It feels like we’re in a continuum, which is really neat.”

“Neat” enough for her to possibly guest-star on an Arrowverse series, if asked? (After all, this is the same franchise that turned Lois Lane into Supergirl’s mom.)

“Yea, totally, depending on what it was,” she answered. “It’d be so much fun.” (With reporting by Vlada Gelman)
