Superman & the HD DVD dilemma...

2586 Views 32 Replies 21 Participants Last post by  PRO-630HD
The facts:

The only HD DVD's to be released will be Superman The Movie (extended cut), Superman 2 (Donner Cut) and Superman Returns.

That means that the following discs will not be released on HD DVD:

Superman The Movie (theatrical cut w/ commentary)

Superman 2 (theatrical cut/bonus material)

Superman 3

Superman 4

Look Up In The Sky documentary

You Will Believe documentary

So that means that anyone who wants both will have to buy the HD DVD's AND the SD DVD boxed set...which will definitely cost $$$. I'm thinking about $120-$140 for all.

Anyone else doing this? Or is the HD stuff "good enough?"

I prefer the DC of Superman: The Movie, and I'm quite sure I'll prefer the Donner Cut of Superman II, since I can't really stand most of Richard Lester's changes. Superman III and IV are a non-issue. Bottom line - HD DVD stuff is plenty for me.
I know it doesn't "mean" anything persay, but in the past, they have been a pretty good indicator, as far as HD-DVD's go... there's a "place holder" on Amazon.com for the Superman Ultimate Collection HD-DVD.

I pre-ordered the HD-DVD's, and will cancel and order the set if it's made available... I think it's unlikely tho.

I stopped buying DVD's about two months ago, to focus my limited budget on HD-DVD's instead, so I won't be getting the DVD set in either case.

From the insider information I've heard, the Ultimate Collection ain't happening. I wish we had an insider at WB to tell us for sure.
HD-DVD can do seamless branching, so maybe both cuts will be there.

Me, I am hoping the HD transfer to be shown on HD-Net Movies in Novembver is good so I can just add the original soundtrack (via PCM Laserdisc) to the film. I absolutely HATE HATE HATE the remixed and ruined soundtrack for STM, which was done without Richard Donner's knowledge. he was not aware they replaced all of the foley and only found out in an interview when asked if he was aware how upset fans of the film were about it.

Of cpurse, if the original soundtrack is on the HD-DVD, then it's OK and I can just purchase it.
It's already confirmed. We're not getting theatrical on either of the first two.

I'm still unclear about where this has been confirmed. They have yet to announce much of anything about this, and the press release basically just confirmed that these two were coming on the same day, with Superman running 151 minutes, while the extended edition is actually 154. If there's an actual spec sheet with the full specs confirming this, then I'll shrug and still buy just the HD DVD. But as of right now, we don't know for certain what we're getting on the HD DVD version.
OK fine...You can wait. I know for sure that they ain't doing it yet.

Either way, before I jumped on the HD-DVD wagon I had plans to pick up the Ultimate collection. I really don't dig 3 & 4 though so the only thing I feel I'm missing are the documentary's. I guess I can live with out them for now so I'm happy with the upcoming HD-DVD releases of the only ones I care about. Interested in seeing how the Donner cut plays out.

Where were you able to pre-order these? I have searched all of my usual online places and haven't had much luck. DVDplanet has Returns and Superman I on there but not Superman II. I'd like to be able to order all 3 at once from the same place.
My bad! I keep a list of stuff to pre-order, my memory's getting faulty I guess... I haven't actually pre-ordered these titles, they're just on my list, along with titles like Miami Vice.
While it's unfortunate that all of the Superman films won't be in HD this fall I am very content with the announcements because I only liked 1&2 anyway. Will be getting those and Returns for sure. One would hope the rest of the series will hit HD DVD in the near future though I think Warner is making a mistake not releasing them all at once.

Richard Pryor and drunk Superman. :D
I only care about Superman The Movie DC, Superman II Donner Cut & Superman Returns. I've never owned Superman III & IV on any format because they are a waste IMO.
If possible, could someone please briefly describe the differences between the Superman II Donner cut and Lester (theatrical) cut. Thanks alot. .. Jeff
Briefly? Not possible. Start here:

Basically, Lester reshot a lot of what Donner shot. Donner never shot the Villains conquering the world sequence, nor did he shoot the fight in Metropolis (just the interiors at the Daily Planet, much of which Lester reshot anyway). This is why those two major sequences are so horrendously bad and jammed with lame comedy.

The Donner cut will be completely different. The two major sequences I mention above will be cut down to remove the lame comedy slapstick.

Bill Hunt is in constant contact with WB and he says that they are doing it, at least in some form.
