Surprised, HD-A1 works for me

1631 Views 28 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  applejackaz
After reading the forum, I was expecting problems when I got mine yesterday. I just removed my old dvd and hooked up the new hddvd. We watched TLS with great pix and sound.

Today read the manuel and hooked up to my Monoprice 5x1 switcher to the DVI input of my Hitachi 51f500. Still no problems. I can switch to the Tivo or the H20 and back with no hdmi error. In the menu before starting the movie I do get a hdmi error if I switch but just pressing play brings it back. Just watched Serinity, great pix and sound.

My point is, it work very well if you just want to watch movies. Yes, the remote is hard to see and the down arrow takes a special touch.

Bottom line, it gives the best pix I have ever seen on my tv and I love it!

And we have another happy "disgrace of a player" user. :)
I wonder how many reviewers rushed to return it?
I have had it for two weeks and after watching several movies is still working without problems. I can even manage the remote control now, after too much practice and I also realized that some people are overeacting about how long the movies take to load.

The only thing I do not like is the 5.1 analog set up. I still not very convienced it is better than just the optical one.

In the other hand I will not say that the picture is amazing , but I can say that is very good...even in standard DVD.

Some people will always overeact even if they like it or not.
I thought that using the hdmi produces the best audio from the player. I have a Panasonic SA-XR70 coming with hdmi and if that works out I plan on buying the SA-XR57 (also with hdmi) when it's available in July. :)
SA-XR57 will not have HDMI 1.3 Better wait for the XR700

Really no hdmi on the XR57? Well I guess I wait for the XR700. I just assumed since it was a new receeiver that it would have hdmi. :)
Same here, 4 movies (One watched 3 times with friends) so far, 0 problem, 0 lock, 0 jump , 0 nothing..

I think he was referring to that the XR57 will have HDMI version 1.1, instead of the HDMI version 1.3 being implemented. The different version of HDMI is why I have not purchased any equipment with HDMI. As I have read reviews, HDMI for audio output offers no advantage on the A1/XA1 other than the convenience of on small HDMI cable instead of 6 RCA cables for the 5.1 analog output. I use the 5.1 analog output for HD DVD's, and the DD+ audio on most HD DVD's (especially Serenity) is much fuller & richer than the Dolby or DTS audio on standard DVD's.

I too opened the box of my XA1 with much trepidation after reading some of the complaints here. Oh my God! I thought - it's going to take 5 minutes to load a disk and then freeze on me. I'd read of a "poll" here, asking owners to check the build date on the back, claiming those with April build dates had "fixes" over the March builds. Nervously I peer at the back- Oh my God! Mine has a February build date! It's just not going to even start up!

Zero problems, zero complaints. I've played 6 HD DVD's, several standards DVD's. Love the video & audio quality of the HD DVD's, impressed with the upconversion on SD DVD's. Biggest bang for the buck of any component I've added to my HTS in years.

It will have HDMI 1.1, not HDMI 1.3, as per the press release. Of course, if the XR57 is delayed beyond June, as originally announced, that could change.
Just to chime in a little late to the party...

Have not had any problems with my Toshiba A1, watched Hd-DVD movies, SD, Concert DVD's, etc...

No problems as yet with lockups, freeze, ...

Sit back and enjoy the phenomenal picture.

My sentiments exactly. I think some people have gone overbard with these disgrace reviews to scare people off. If it was as bad as they say it wouldn't even be able to stay on the market.

The sky isn't falling.

Per some of the reviews I believe applejackaz got the only working HD-A1 on the planet. :)
Me too. :D
Watched Training Day last night with no problems at all. And what an amazing picture to a great movie.
Another satisfied owner thus far as well. I knew the HD would look great but the upconvert on the SD's is pretty outstanding too.
No problems here with the Toshiba..using monoprice HDMI switch. Love the picture and sound quality!

Kevin
I too have had zero problems. I would venture to say most don't have problems. We just hear about the ones that do.
I have had no problems with my HD-A1 either. I agree with what Scoob said...I remember reading the Xbox 360 forums and hearing alot of posts about defective 360's back when they first came out. Thankfully, like the HD-A1, I've had zero problems with my 360. I feel like I made a great investment and I can't wait for more movies to be released.
based on the HDDVD users report, 90% of thosse responding are keeping it. Looks like Applelackaz might not have "the only working HD-A1 on the planet."
