Surround Processor for $75,000 ?!

600 Views 29 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  simonsez
I got my copy of Home Theatre Magazine today (Special Anniversary Issue I may ad, don't ask me why I still get this publication).

On page 32/33 there is an add for a surround processor from a company called Audio Design Associates called the Cinema Renissance. They list the retail price at $75,000.

Who are these guys and ARE YOU KIDDING ME!

Hey, they don't have to sell thousands of them. If only one person buys one, then it pays for the ad and they make $74,900. Isn't America wonderful?

I must say that I still enjoy Home Theater Magazine quite a bit and subscribe to it, SGHT, Audio Magazine and Stereophile. Haven't seen this processor or heard of them either. I doubt movie houses even spend this much on decoders unless it's for their entire chain, but I may be wrong. No one will pay near that much for it, that's why you companies like Meridian and others offering units in the 10K and under price range. There's not many sells or profit for them on higher dollar units. Also, I don't care how good it sounds or what it does, nothing is worth that price. It could be a miss-print which is what I'm assuming (maybe $7,500?)

Jeff
ADA has been around for some years, favored by some custom installers. The $75,000 must be a misprint. No way, Jose!!!

Sorry, it's late and I miss-read the company or else I would've reconized them as ADA. Anyway, I still think it's a miss-print because they would be out of the ball park on that price. I'll check into it some more, I know someone over there.

Gotta get some zzzzzs.

Jeff
I double checked the article.

"Why are we showing you a $75,000 preamp? Because the Ferrari driving, Rolex-wearing share of Home Theatre readers might require this extreme preamp for their high-end setup."

"Priced at a heart-stopping $75,000, the Cinema Renaissance preamp is the first in ADA's Albert G. Langella Signature Series of high-end gear"

If this is the "first" I can't wait to see the MKII model!

Hmm, and what pray tell would the McLaren driving, TAG Heuer-wearing share use? Guess we blew that market completely!!!

Albert has been designing stuff forever, I'm sure it is an interesting unit..

Buzz,

Finally the Ferrari club is ahead of McLaren!

That often happens early in the season.

Interesting thought as I sit here in Indy (for CEDIA, not (tragically) way early for the USGP).

And I might add that if the boards and SMT placement/soldering of our processor were built outside of TAG Electronic systems, our AV32R might cost $75,001!!!!

Ah, but would it sound like a Ferrari?
If the processor included a McLaren F1 as part of the package.... http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

or,

just tie 2 Meridian 861s together with 2 Theta Casablanca IIs, throw in the new Tag processor and you still have some money left over, perhaps for some new surrounds.... DOH

- Jerry
Buzz, Perhaps we should enlighten all, the F1 cost in excess of $1 million, was by invitation only, and is no longer sold.

Jerry, guess the 861 is not overpriced after all!

Steve
Steve,

overpriced? Now Meridian can advertise their 861 as a real bargain!

Buzz,

Can you elaborate a little on how the Tag and McLaren companie(s)? are working (together?) to produce audio equipment? I mean, we all know Tag Heuer makes nice watches, and many know that McLaren, among other things, made the fantastically amazing F1 sports car/racer (its really a barely street legal racer) George Harrison has one shown at the beginning of the Beatles Anthology.

I'd be happy to but being at CEDIA now, time is a little tight. Alot of the circuit board work is done at TAG Electronic systems, which has extrememly sophisticated design, engineering and manufacturing facilities. Much more sophisticated then one would ever use for audio, since it was developed for a much more demanding application.

Best I can tell you for now, is go to our web site and read a couple of the technical papers on electronic and industrial design. The gear is built better then anything I have ever seen, anywhere. Example; The gold-plated multilayer boards have alll the SMT soldering done not with wave soldering, but using (very expensive) inert gas filled infrared re-flow machines.

But that's only half of it. The other half is the exhaust smell of a classic 12 banger running on caster oil.

Sorry to dissapoint you, we are not exhibiting at CEDIA, although there are a couple of units (the Av32R with EX and a DVD32R prototype) on display in the THX booth. But no active demos.

Back to topic; wonder if the ADA $75,000 will be on demo? If not, we'll get Dennis to burn oil and make loud Ferrari noises over the PA. Wait, loud Ferrari noises, isn't that redundant?

Buzz,

FYI, the sounds emitted from Ferrari automobiles are not considered noise but rather character.

thats only if the Ferrari in question is actually working (a 50/50 proposition!) http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I guess Ill just have to enjoy the physical appearance of the units at THX. the review in HT mag was very nice.

- Jerry
Jerry,

I am much more forgiving with less than perfection on the Ferrari than I am on the Meridian!

The 50% when it does work makes it all worthwhile.

Actually since the 348 the whole line has gotten considerable mnore reliable to the point that from the 355 and on the cars can actually be used on a regular basis with no issues.
