My surround speakers will not be equal unfortunately,

Where would you place the most capable pair ?

Sides or rears ?

Thanks. I was thinking I had it ass-backwards. I used to think sides were just fill-ins between front and back but started to question this from other comments I've seen.

Kinda depends on what surround format are you shooting for - 5.1 = sides over rear, 7.1 = both
And what type of speakers you have. normal vs bi/dipole.

Side surrounds are the 4 and 5 in 5.1. These should be the better speakers. Native 7.1 content does exist but is limited and the 4 and 5 are still the same. Any 5.1 content matrixed into 7.1 uses the 4 and 5 to extract the 6 and 7.

I have a set of towers that are getting relegated to surround duty.
I was also going to build some volt8 kits for 7 channel surrounds and 4 volt6 for ceiling/atmos duty.

I will end up with 7.2.4 or maybe try 5.2.4 first and see how it sounds from there.
