Surround sound from Macbook Pro

1401 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Yardl3y
Hi! I watch most of my content from Blueray rips off of my Macbook Pro which I connect to my TV via HDMI. For audio I use a 1/8" to AV from the headphone jack of the Macbook to my cheap surround sound system which only accepts one AV input.

I am looking for a system to which I can connect my Macbook Pro and be able to listen to the surround sound from the Blueray rips. I believe the headphone jack on the Macbook Pro's also send out optical digital audio.

Can anyone help me out with this? It's been a long time since I've had decent audio to go with my movies! Thanks

So I've been doing some research and I've found out some pretty interesting things. First of all the headphone jack on the Macbook Pro's do indeed send out optical as well. But most importantly, the newer 2010 Macbook Pro's, along with the correct Mini Display to HDMI adapter support audio over HDMI through the Mini Display port!!!!

I'm going to order the adapter and test this out to be sure. So now I have a new question, if I can get sound out of the Mini Display port using the HDMI adapter and I plug that into a receiver will this be 5.1 surround sound?
