Surround Sound Issue

I have a Sony 50" SXRD connected to a DVR/ cable box via HDMI, and to a DVD player with component cables. Both the cable and DVD are connected to my receiver with optical cables.

The problem is this. I get DTS on my DVD discs, but not from cable. The strange thing in that when I am connected to a cable program that has DTS, I get the DTS only when the video input is not set to the cable HDMI input port that carries the video. In other words when connected to an HBO movie with the TV connected to the HDMI input, the the receiver gives me Prologic stereo. But if I simply change the TV input to any other input, I lose the video as expected by now get the sound from the video in DTS. Any ideas?

When the TV is set to the HDMI input from the cable STB, the TV and the STB negotiate how the digital audio will be sent from ther STB to the TV. Since the TV does not have surround sound speaker capability, it tells the STB to send 2 channel digital audio. The STB apparently can only decode the received audio as either 2 channel, or 5 channel, not both simultaneously. Thus, when the TV is set to the HDMI input, the STB must decode the sound as 2 channel digital, and sends that over the optical cable to the receiver. When the TV is set to a different input and breaks the HDMI connection with the STB, the STB reverts to the default 5 channel sound decoding.

Incidently, the cable STB outputs only 5.1 channel Dolby Digital audio, not DTS audio. The DVD player can be set to output either 5.1 Dolby or DTS sound, providing DTS is available on the particular DVD in use. DTS is a different method of encoding multi-channel sound than 5.1 Dolby Digital.

I had a similar problem (prior to picking up an HDMI dvd player).

I ended up just using component for my cable box (which actually looked slightly better than HDMI). With my new dvd player I can set it to output 5.1 over the optical or coax connections or 2 channel digital over the HDMI cable. Seems like it's probably just a setting on your box somewhere, if not and you have a free component connection I'd probably hook it up that way, it's hard to sacrafice 5.1 sound once you get used to it.

Thanks. This is exactly what was happening. I switched to use component cables from the cable box and HDMI from the DVD box. I know get surround sound from both when it is available.

It strange to me that the Cable Box designed this way.
