Why are stereo amplifiers still being made? Can someone explain to me why, for instance, the Harman/Kardon HK970 is better than the Harman/Kardon AVR 235 when it comes to stereo sound? What will the HK970 give in a stereo system that the AVR 235 won't?

I really surprised they don't make more stereo receivers. I would love to have a really high quality 2 channel system. If the manufacturers could make a quality 2-channel receiver for $300 - $800, that would be interesting to me.

Probably because the majority of music/audio programs are still 2-channel, and most folks have at least two main loudspeakers in their listening room.

Looking at the specs, the 2-channel integrated amp is slightly higher per channel vs. the multi-channel. You'd have to compare the overall circuit topology of the 2-channel vs multi-channel to see if better components were used.
