Surrounds for Infinity Beta 20 l/c/r

1279 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  mlashcorp
I just bought three Infinity Beta 20's for my l/c/r, and now I need to get surrounds.

I'm torn between buying two more Beta 20's for surrounds, or just getting some cheaper (and smaller) surrounds.

Are there any budget speakers (say, under $100 shipped) that would blend well with the Beta 20's (insignia's, polk r150, athena ws-15 etc), or should I just bite the bullet and get two more Beta's?

Thanks!

Get the beta 20s. Otherwise you'll always look at your surrounds as a weakspot in your system, especially if you plan on enjoying an "all channel stereo" type of music experience. I know I question buying the cheaper surrounds all the time (Polk R150's here).
Thanks for the helpful post Jnick.

I actually hadn't even considered the "all channel stereo" scenario.

What l/r/c do you have with your Polks?
If not another pair of Beta 20s, Beta 10s. You've already (wisely) purchased an identical matching speaker for your center spot and you probably know the advantage of doing this. So, why stop there? However the 10s will sound VERY similar and you could make an argument for purchasing them. Namely, they are smaller (the 20s are pretty big speakers). But the savings is not really going to be that huge.
I sense a pattern here...

sivadselim, size isn't really a concern, so between Beta 10's and 20's, I think I'd go for the 20's.

In fact, I think that's what I'll probably end up doing.

Thanks guys!

Just curious. You ARE using the Beta 20 that's in the center vertically as is intended, correct?
Yeah, the Beta 20 being used as the center will be used vertically. From the bit of reading I did, it sounded like, when used as centers, the 20's aren't good candidates for horizontal placement because of the "waveguide" (or whatever it's called) on the tweeter.
Hello,

I have just bought a pair of infinity beta 20's and intend to pair them with a onkyo SR-606 next year. (right now they will be connected to the built-in amplifier in my logitech z-5450 speakers).

This caught my attention:

What is the advantage of buying an identical speaker for the center? Calibration? Balance? I was considering an infinity center speaker...

Thank you.

Thank you.

Here's an article by Tom Nousaine that answers your question.
