Surrounds speakers seemed muddled?

I have an Canton 10-MX II speaker set hooked up to a Panny XR55. In DDPLx or Neo, when I listen to the surrounds, they sound muddle. The sound is a bit static. I check my wires and they are all secure. I had even switched receivers from the Panny to an HK 240 and still the same thing. When I listen to them in the center, I don't really hear a problem....only when I put my ear next to the surrounds. Is this normal?
