I just bought a set of Infinity Alphas as follow:

Fronts: 50

Center: 37C

Surrounds: 25ES

I have these speakers driven by an Onkyo TX-DS797 (6x100W) and the system is located in a 20x12x9 livingroom.

I got the Infinity PS12 (which is a 12", 300W sub), but I am not very happy with the way it sounds. If it's not within 2' from any corner, I can hardly hear it with the level at max).

I am thinking to replace it with an Alpha 1200s, but after looking thru the AVS Forum, I found out that SVS 25-31 PCi is about the same price and very interesting.

I never listened to either SVS or 1200s.

AVS gurus, a/v gods, please hear my prayers and give me some advice ... :)

Thanks,

Sebi

If you want loud and tight then go with the SVS. The Alpha is a clean and musical sub but has somewhat modest max output and extension capabilities for the bass-heads among us. If your sub level is properly calibrated then I cannot see it not being enough unless the room is huge, but to each his own. If you have a huge bass peak in your room that you wish you could get rid of then buy the Alpha and take advantage of it's RABOS parametric EQ abilities. The top of the line SVS models have EQ built-in as well, but only in their flagship models, and I don't believe it's nearly as user friendly as the RABOS setup Infinity has created.

The above comments sound a bout right.

I have the IL120 Infinity Sub, its similar I think. Look at the pictures in my signature. 12 inch CMMD driver 500 RMS digital amp, parametric EQ, RABOS capable, does this ring a bell?

Nice sub, very clean bass, plentiful for your size room, which is similar to mine. Its considered a musical sub, as opposed to a HT max-output sub. It also adheres to the Infinity philosophy of removing all coloration from their speakers..

Also, consider the shape and peculiar covering on the SVS sub, and whether that fits your room.

Thank you for all the replies but now I am going to throw in the list of choices another one, the Paradigm PW2200.

I currently have the Infinity PS12 and I am not happy about it.

It doesn't produce much output (the gain dial is at 80-90%) and it doesn't seem to be musical with DTS audio discs or DVD Audios ...

Sebi,

Have you checked all the settings on your receiver? I had a similar experience with my new sub and found the level on the .1 channel was set far too low. Bumped it up to 0db, used my SPL meter and now it will level a small building. Also, are your speakers set to small? Another thought...how is your crossover set on the sub/receiver? I know these are simplistic solutions you've probably already thought of but just thought I'd ask. Have never heard your sub but it seems strange you've maxed out the gain and still aren't getting the volume you desire...unless you desire ALOT of base.

As far as a new sub, I just got the SVS PCI 20-39 and am very pleased. Only drawback is it won't win any beauty contest and you can't hide it from view. It will, however, produce some very strong base and blends well musically with my system.

LDog, the level for .1 channel is set to 0db, the peak level is disabled. I have an Onkyo TX-DS797 which has the crossover fixed to 80Hz (THX stuff).

After further tests I've done yesterday evening I found out that the internal test tone from the amp is reproduced very loud. When I enabled the peak level in the amp's menu, it starts a test tone which almost killed me (very loud). Now, this test tone is very very loud comparing to the freq sweep you hear in Avia or sound in the movies (the cannons in Master and Commander for example). This is rather weird. I guess I am missing something. I hope the amp is not broken or something ...

Sounds like the problem is not the sub...good news?!? I'm not familiar with your amp so not much help there. At least you know where the problem is, I'm sure someone else here can help you find a solution. It would seem to me that if the internal test tone is appropriately loud, there must be something going on with your DVD player setup or the receiver setup on the DVD input (i.e. not the amp). Guess you could also check your audio cable. Good luck!

Another question:

If I run the fronts thru the sub and I set the sub to normal, then the sub will be powered only by the amp, or the internal sub amplifier will work too?

If you like Movies at all.....the 20-39PCi will make you ecstatic. I know mine does. Clean and accurate.....yet it can handle the sub 16hz stuff in the Ice Fields of Titan AE and the Machine Voice in the last Matrix flic no problem.(at over 100db too!) Those others you mentioned cant get close. Yet in my music (from Rock to Classical) it is magic to these ears. I have an open cornered cathedral ceilinged 15x20 HT/Family room. And the service is beyond approach, once you get an SVS, your a member for life. A very personal company.

Cheers!

besebi,

Without any personal knowledge of your setup, I'm not much help. You may want to start another thread with your last question...otherwise you'll just keep getting recommendations on a new sub.
