SVS upgrade time

1295 Views 18 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  nwhitta
I now have a Paradigm PW-2200 and have been quite happy with it on movies, but I now want to upgrade to an SVS Box sub because of a need for tighter bass and better bass.

I have it narrowed it down to these 3... PB 12 plus...Pb 12 plus2 or the PB 12 ultra. Is the ultra overkill? I listen to 90% movies and I just feel the need to upgrade... Any Suggestions?

For 90% movies you want the PB12 Plus/2, and yes it is overkill.

The size of your room would factor into the equation.
I would give Tom at SVS an email let him know what you are looking for and your room size, and he wil give you a good recmommendation as to which would be the best option without trying to rip you off :)
Hi-

The size of your room is a pretty big factor... Add it, along with your listening levels and you'll get some better conversation. That said, you'll never really have overkill with a sub. You can almost always use a the additional overhead.

I've had great responses from all the folks at SVS. In fact, they will sometimes try to "undersell" you.
Room size is 30' long x 14' wide x 8' tall "perfect rectangle" but the T.V. area with furniture is 14 x 16, the rest of it is kitchen. There is two openings on the west side of the room, one is a hall way and the other is the dining room.

I have a Denon 3805 that drives the 7.1 system, the back speakers are 15' from the T.V.

Has anybody ever went from a Paradigm Pw-2200 to an Pb-12 plus/2, What I'm looking for is little tighter Bass. The 2200 is great for big sound but I think sometimes it is a little muddy. Because for 1300 bones, I do want to be able to tell the difference.
Another option would be to look into the Paradigm Servo 15.very good sub lots of output and it has much more tighter bass than the Pw 2200. Something that I m sure you could work out would ot be to get the best discount on the Servo 15 and then trade in your PW 2200 to pay for some more of the bill and pay the difference. One thing I would maybe try before buying a new sub is try experimenting with new placements in the room. Since you like you PW 2200 alot i would see if a differnt placement would clean up some of the bass.
My theater is a little smaller than yours (12' by 24"). I'm currently using 2 PB12-Plus/2 subs.

I'm 50% movies, and 50% music videos. I found a substantial improvement by adding the

second unit. My thinking is, Home theaters is about 2 things; video resolution and SUBS.

I'm seriously thinking about adding two more PB12-Plus/2 subs. It's about awesome presence

at normal theater volume.
I should have my PB12-Plus/2 here any minute... I'll let you know how I like it. :D
I seriously doubt an SVS sub is going to give you "tighter" bass than the PW-2200. The 2200 is in a large enclosure with tuning at ~20-22 Hz. I think you could save a bunch of money and simply get a PEQ or SMS-1 and treat the response of the PW-2200 a little bit.

In my room, due to listener position and limited sub placement options, I had a LARGE hump from 32-50 Hz in my room with the PW-2200. A single band of carefully done PEQ gave me a nice slightly rising response from 70-20 Hz at the listening position (average across couch). I cannot overstate how much of a difference this has made to both music and movie sound. Any boominess or overhang is completely gone and the sub seems pretty much transparent. A plus is that, in reducing the hump, I had to raise the overall level, finally giving me proper levels of mid-bass and a healthy increase below 30 Hz.

Now if you are talking about wanting increased output down low...then yes, a PB/2 is going to blow the 2200 out of the water.

I'd have to add size on the video side - don't sacrifice quality but size does matter! (cue Beavis/Butthead laughs).

that being said getting the (one) 12+/2 has made a HUGE difference in my overall experience.
I was all ready take Rynberg's advice and get a Velodyne SMS-1 Till I found out the price! That is as much as I paid for my Sub " Bought in Canada in 2002 when the dollar was super strong "

Don't mind paying $100-$200 to achieve the best placement for the Sub. Any Suggestions?

As an alternative, you can get a cheap PEQ and ref mic. You can even get away with using the Radio Shack SPL meter. Use the free Room EQ Wizard software and measure your room/sub yourself. It seems like a lot of money, but the difference in sound quality is pretty dramatic.
Already have the Radio Shack SPL meter, and have calibrated with the rest of the 7 speakers. What do I need to buy to find out the perfect sub placement? Do I need to bite the bullet and shell out some money for the SMS because this hobby will always be one of my favorites.
Instead of one large (overkill) sub you may want to get two smaller subs which should help get a more even room response.
Of course if you're colocating them it doesn't matter...

If thats what you have narrowed it down to I would go for the /2 being that it has the .3 drivers. When the new TV-12 comes out (it'll most likely be called something different) then I would back track on that advice if it proves itself?

Another option would be DIY, but I wont waste your time or my bandwidth if your not interested..I say that respectfully. It's certainly understandable if this option is not a consideration, but for a $750 to $1200 you can build yourself allot of sub and it isn't that hard at all.
If the price of the SMS 1 makes your eyes water, then take a look at the Behringer Feedback Destroyer. Same job, less cash.
