I upgraded a unit with a 250 gig drive, which i got cheap, and i know now that it was cheap because it is noisy, I can hear clicking, even faster clicking when I fast forward. I also have another upgraded unit with a quiet drive. The unit with the quiet drive had the noisy fan, and the one with the loud drive has a quiet fan. Would I be able to swap the drives between the units? I want to put the noisy one out of the bedroom to keep it quiet for sleeping.

They'll both complain about needing to check for activation before you can do anything else with them. Remember you're also switching identities, IVS names and anything else associated with them (except the ReplayTV serial number and ISN).

Maybe someone who has done this more recently can comment. My

recollection was when swapping drives, it didn't complain about activation,

only when copying the image onto a different drive did it complain (which

gets fixed after net connect). I could be remembering wrong. Most folks

copy the image onto a new drive so they wouldn't be able to comment.

I'm pretty sure it will nag you about activation when you swap drives. Doesn't really matter since it's easily fixed with a net connect.

Would it be less work to just swap the fans?

This wouldn't work. Assuming one is quieter because it is in a newer 50xx, the fans themselves are actually the same. The newer 50xx models just had a motherboard revision that permit the software to control fan speed by varying the voltage provided to the fan.
