Sweet mother of God... my panny plasma is INCREDIBLE

Let me give you some background:

I have owned a 2005 mitubishi 42" plasma

I have owned a 37" mitubishi 37" LCD

I have owned a 56" samsung DLP TV model hls-5698 or something like that

This TH-42PX75U plasma DESTROYS them

Standard definition? Awesome. Best SD I've seen at this screen size, ever.

High Definition? I nearly had a heart attack. Sweet LORD! I've watched tons of HD and this TV makes it so clear, so smooth, so crisp and clean and pure. I mean, this is unreal. I think once I hook up HD-DVD to this I'll never want to .. get off the dang couch. Law and Order and the spurs vs suns and some HD local news is all it took for me. All this for free over the air!

I used CNETs recommended settings.

Does anyone else NOT understand why so many are buying LCD for more money? 1080p? GIMMICK.. unless your screen is like 55" or larger and you're sitting close. Geeeeeeeeeeeeeez

Congrats on your new Panny. One thing though, 1080p is no gimmick and neither is HD-DVD/BluRay which are also 1080p. But you are correct in saying that you need a 55"+ dispay to really appreciate the full benefits of 1080p, plus proper viewing distances to achieve a minimum 24 degree viewing angle. Put all 3 of these together spells Home Theater...assuming of course you choose your display wisely as you have proven. Good luck.
Let me offer my congratulations as well. Welcome to the Panny club. My 42PX60U has been impressing me for nearly a year with no issues. Did you mention local news in HD? I'm jealous but not enough to move to Detroit.

Theres many reasons why but the two for me was:

false contouring

floating blacks

I know some don't like hearing this but it was a reality for me. I'm looking for a larger TV and I will consider plasma again and keeping an open mind. I have a perfect room for one. But we live and learn, and just one man's opinion doesn't fit all.

Its great your happy with your TV but do understand there are reasons why others buy LCD.

blackacex2,

Wow, your post is almost like mine. I have been thru a series of Mit's and enough Sammy's to fill up BB...........I've been looking at the Panny Plasma's real close.........just trying to figure it all out, spending thousands and thousands trying to get a HD set that will last.........right now we are watching a 20 year old 32" Trinitron...still waiting on the "outcome" with our latest Sammy.

The one major thing I am really intersted is how long do these things last? They say 60,000 hours. I can spend $1300 for a 42" Panny Plasma, and if I get six years out of it I would be happy; but having this stuff fail constantly every year just does not work for me.

Actually the life of a plasma is rated longer than that.

Quoted from the The Plasma Display Coalition Brochure :

"Plasma technology is commonly rated to achieve 60,000 hours of high performance enjoyment before reaching half its original brightness (the industry's measurement of longevity). This is equivalent to more than 27 years of viewing every day for six hours - three times the useful life of you old tube or CRT-based rear-projection set."

This does not mean that the set will stop working in 27 years, only that you may need to turn up the brightness as the set ages.

I think 60,000 hours of usage to half brightness translates into viewing the plasma display 8 hours per day for 20 years. That means to me, don't worry about it. What you should be concerned about is build quality, PQ, and reliability histories. Consumer Reports may be a little weak on actual display reviews, but one thing they do that no other magazine or group performs is "reliability statistics" for various consumer electronic products including TV's. Also, reading and researching on this Forum can definitely give you an idea of reliability & PQ from actual owner's reports. Not scientific but still a guide to help you. From my few years on this Forum, I can easily say that Panasonic displays have a proven track record for reliability. I would rate them "much better than average".
I had had the same experience with a Samsung plasma. No other technology has that WOW factor during night time viewing.
I'll eventually buy a 1080p panny
I am happy with my TH-42PX60U for now I do need a new tv for my bedroom but, cheers to you man!

Agreed. I just got rid of a newer 1080p 42" LCD (clouding issues) that had a stellar image. Just gorgeous, but at below 50", I found 1080p to be useless. I now own a 1080i 50" PDP, and can say most definitely that you need at least 50"+ to justify needing 1080p (and really enjoy the differences). I have Blu-ray.
good TV...I bought one 2 weeks ago

Blackacex2 - would you mind sharing your video settings? I checked Cnet's site for the settings you referred to and was unable to locate them. Thanks

Without question Plasmas offer superior PQ to LCD televisions. The only thing holding back most buyers is the price
