I just switched from a coax digital interconnect to a toslink between my pre-amp and dvd and it eliminated 99% of my hum. My noise floor now is much lower! Anyone else experience this? Everything is already plugged into a Monster HTS 3500.

Probably the main reason that happened. Is in the process of going from a wired coax connection over to a non-wired optical connection. Is that you also eliminated/reduced some type of ground loop problem that you had for some reason or another with the coax connection.

That is one of the advantages of Toslink.... no possibility of ground loops through it. It also can't carry internal RF noise in one component to another like a copper connection (coax) can.

indeed, when building circuits for noisy environments, like around motors etc, it is pretty common to use opto-isolators to separate the ground of the IC controllers, to the motor controllers. (also caps and other things to decouple positioned across the grd and v pins) It helps a lot to keep reliability.

You have just experienced this. This is another major reason I would not say that I recommend a coax. connection between components.
