So i am planing on making the switch to unraid from unbutu server

Now in plan on having 20 drives plus one of those back up drives and a work drive.

Now my question is For the drives that have content on them do i need to wipe them before installing them into unraid?

I regularly took used drives out of Windows and various Linux boxes and added them to my unRaid server. The O/S will "initialize" the added drives when they are assigned to the array. This operation will erase any the data on them.

So if I understand your question, you don't have to "wipe" them first. The unRaid O/S does it's own unique, required, "low level format" on every disk.

Many unRaid users run an unRaid  utility called "preclear" on disks before adding them to the array. This minimizes the amount of time the array is "offline".

Using preclear would not save you any time in setting up a new server
