Swordfish: Has someone hacked my PQ?

1309 Views 18 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  Mr. Pannus
I've been reading a lot about the different codecs VC1, MPEG2, etc. and the problems that can happen with compression aka artifacts. I also understand that sometimes these artifacts are in the master or even can be induced by ones display. I feel I have a solid understanding of all things "video", but always welcome a chance to learn. So...

I watched Swordfish HD DVD (yes, I liked the movie) last night and noticed this...

What is this? I'm thinking it's on the master?

Any help as to understanding what I'm seeing would be appreciated.

One last thing, can someone please verify that this is on your copy as well.

Thanks,

-Mike

Wow. Definitely the master. Looks like a hair.

Compression artifacts are typically one of blockiness, softness, ringing, or banding. You definitely never get a thin line out of it!
I've watched that scene so many times trying to pause it on the right moment and finally I did it. Also the frames before and mostly after it looks like it's still there just digitally erased or something. Kinda like a ghosting effect.
No one wants to see a hair. Show us the HiDef nudie shots of Halle.........we'll look for some sort of artifacts in those shots:)
Thanks for the great shot.

I would assume that it also shows up under 720p or other settings?

I agree - I think it's very important that we ascertain whether this particular "spontaneous unsightly hair" problem has affected the areas of skin tone in her scene also - that would be very disturbing! :)

I might have to convert back to SD DVD just to avoid future recurrences of this horrible artifact! :)
Could it be a visible watermark? :) Or maybe the initials of the compressionist that encoded this title? It looks like some kind of cursive writing! :)

Clean your disc. It has hair on it. :D

Yes, it looks like a notation of a technician who was handling the film.

Thank god he was not able to use his pen when Hale Berry was on :)
That is very weird that they left that in the movie. They usually get those out. they must have missed that one.
It ain't a compression artifact that we can all agree on. I think it's graffiti . :D

Art
I think it is aliens trying to communicate either that or FDT (film detail technology – adding lost film errors such as scratches and stuff) working overtime
No! It's Japanese Kanji, and loosely translated means "B D blows". :)
That's it, these guys working the transfer of masters to HD have to start wearing bonnets. ;)
Well, I'd rather find a hair in my movies, than in my soup ! ;)
Uhh, that's not a hair. That's a stickman, and he's dancing. Seriously. Look at it. Maybe your pubic hair gets up and dances on your face, but mine doesn't. He's got some weird box on his head, though. Maybe this is like a PG-version of the "SEX" in the sky during Lion King. Weird sort of Easter egg, it seems like it.
