There are some of you out there that will own both of these sets.

I am curious to find out the similarities & the differences...along with other SXRD 2005 XBR1 owners, I'm sure. ;)

Refer to the XBR2 owners thread for comparisons.

The main difference is the xbr2 can accept a 1080p input. Thus players that output true 1080p their "should" be a noticable difference over last years model that dont accept it. Other than that i still think xbr2 is more advanced, with a year to improve some of the flaws that plaqued the xbr1.

I'm happy w/ my XBR1 but what I want to know is, whether or not there is a way to retrofit my XBR1 to accept a 1080P input ????

I wonder if 1080P is that big of a jump over 1080i ?

NO, this isn't an option

No retrofit--ever. However, from everything I've read on these threads, a 1080p input does not usually provide ANY PQ advantage. All sources are scaled to 1080p on the XBR1; and most of those sources will remain 1080i for the forseeable future, anyway. Broadcast and cable HDTV is either 720p or 1080i. Apparently, HD dvd, even when outputting 1080p (my Toshiba HD DVD is capable of only 1080i) will, according to most explanations, not produce a better picture.

Computer monitor use would benefit from accepting a 1080p source, but there are other factors there that are more of an issue.

It has a more refined Wega Engine (aka SD doesn't look quite as awful as it does on the XBR1). The XBR2 actually accepts 1080p and uses newer SXRD chips. With any luck fewer XBR2s will turn green on their owners. After working in a B&M for a while and seeing both the 50" and 60" XBR1 displays turn green, I was extremely confident with my decision to go with my Samsung DLP.

SD does not look awful on the XBR1...You enjoy that harsher looking Samsung! Enjoy!
I'm going to answer this a little differently - The features provided on the 1 and 2 are vastly different and so is the price point. When 60 XBR1's initially came out they were $4999 - $700 more than the XBR2 MSRP with lot less features!!

Now with the XBR2 you get -

1. HDMI 1.2a compatibility. (no value add)

2. True 1080p input. (Value add for future gizmo releases - PS3, BR, HD-DVD, HD-DVDR etc.)

3. 180W bulb. (Very Value add. Can make Green Glob disappear fast!)

4. Spare 180W bulb. (What can I say - More the merrier :))

5. 2.5ms Total (Rise and Fall time). (That's 2x the performance of XBR1)

6. DRC MF v2.5 (People who have tested it are impressed)

7. San Memory Stick reader. (Who cared for it anyways....other than us geeks to watch for the glob ;)). BUT, we now get another HDMI input in the front!

8. PC now scales to 1920x1080 via VGA? (Don't know for sure)

9. TV Guide Feature. (I would love to have one.....since I only watch OTA, this is a boon!!)

10. Better Remote (Seems more user friendly than the old Brushed AL candystick, though I love the feel of my XBR1 remote - it's a jewelry item)

There may be more differences, but to me all of these at almost 20% less price point than last year indicates as a win-win for consumers. I still ponder how can people compare these 2 TV's in the same breath?!? They are a WORLD APART!!!

For those with XBR2's - enjoy the set for it is we (XBR1 owners) who made your viewing experience a whole lot better :).
