I have not seen Syntax LCD TVs yet and have no idea how they fare against 1st and 2nd tier LCD TV products. Recent rumours prompted me to check their website and I came across the upcoming 37" LCD TV which on paper sounds like a great value. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think this is the first LCD panel in this size range to have 1920x1080 native resolution. I am really interested to take a closer look at this unit. Also would be nice to get together in this thread all the information we can about this panel. Hopefully soon we will hear some first feedback from early adopters :)

It is supposed to start shipping in late December 2004. MSRP will be under $3K. I asked Syntax sales about some specifics and so far they shared this info with me:

- speakers are not detachable

- this panel utilizes Pixelworks deinterlacer/scaler.

Any feedback on Pixelworks chipsets? Which TVs are using them? Are they any good? how do they compare to DCDi or Silicon Image solutions?

I checked the Pixelworks website and it looks like Syntax might have PW181 chipset in it (unless newer solution that is not published on their website is available). Looks good, supports WUXGA. If interested follow the link where you will find a pdf with the PW181 specs.

I'm curious to see the PQ of this display vs. the Sharp. One big upside that the Sharp has (for me) is the media box -- I don't want to run a ton of wires to the display.

I'll also be curious to see how Sharp responds. Not that long until CES!

I figure the 32' model will sell for just around 2K initially, but will quickly slide for under $1800.

I just saw the 37" model listed on Buy.com - ironically they show the MSRP for this model above $3K and then graciously offer a discount which basically brings the price to the $3K mark. Ironicaly because the manufacturer rep told me the MSRP will be under $3K. They also seem to cheat with the shipping dates claiming the unit will ship in 1-2 weeks, when the Syntax guy told me they will ship 2nd half of December.

Btw, apologies for slightly misspelling the model number: instead of LC37HV as I typed in the thread header it should read LT37HV.

Moderators, could you please update the model number in the thread header? Thanks a lot.

Strange, the rep told me that the 37" will be arriving in November.

FYI, Syntax does not believe in inflated MSRP, therefore their MSRP and MAP is the same. The list price will most likely be very close to the selling price.

There is only one prototype I am aware of which is displayed at their office. Unfortunately, the 37" was not connected to HD source so I can't comment on the image quality. the 32" was amazingly vivid and bright and looked like a plasma.

I immediately sold my 40" Samsung DLP in anticipation of the 37" LCD.

Kei, I hope the rep you talked to was more knowledgable than the guy from Syntax Sales dept I had exchanged a few emails with. Below I pasted a portion of the email dealing with the availability and MSRP:

Thanks kindly! I tried various searches for "syntax" and "lcd" and found nothing, and managed to spell olevia wrong when I searched for that :)

If all th specs on this display are legit then this is the best bang for buck LCD I have seen anywhere. 1920x1080 on a 37" LCD for less than $3K? That is nuts.

I am not concerned about the scaler chipset used on the LCD as I will be hooking it up directly to a HTPC. Only concern I have is the PQ vs. the top-end Sharp Aquos 37" display. Are there any factors other than the resolution that will impact the picture quality? Thanks.

Ok, if the specs match up to the Sharp and Sharp is a known product and everyone agrees that the Sharp LCDs have awesome PQ, can we logically assume that the Syntax will also have an awesome PQ (i.e. if the goose is good, the gander must also be good!).

Since the specs match up then what could make the PQ worse or better than the Sharp LCDs? Thanks.

So here's the thing: Specs lie. Specs often are fudged. Specs fail to the story.

So, no, I don't agree at all that if this thing specs out it's the equal of the Sharp. In fact, while it might be very good -- we'll see soon enough -- given that it's likely based on a Taiwanese panel, I doubt it will be as good. So far, the CMO, AUO and CPT panels in general don't match up to the LG.Philips and Sharp panels.
