Is there any way to do a system back-up of a ReplayTV 5040?

I know that this is a strange question.. but I have been reading in this and other forums where 'BAD' software updates have caused working ReplayTV devices to crash.. causing them to be shipped back for a replacement.. where if the system was backuped up.. all an owner would have to do would do a system recovery.

As a side note.. sure would like to know if a USB external storage device could be attached to the 5xxx series of devices to add to the systems over all media storage.

If you want to void your warranty, you can remove the drive and mirror it using tools found here. Then you can restore as well as go to larger drives fairly easily.

You can use DVarchive to extract your shows to a PC for safe keeping if it's show content you are worried about loosing

No, you can't use an external USB Drive.

One nice thing about backing up your unit is the channel guide will have

your local channels without needing a net connect.

Thanks for the replies!

I just would be nice to be able to use the USB port to do a system back-up!

And/or to add more storage space...

I am not worried about doing a harddrive upgrade in the future...

For both questions the answer is no, not currently, and not in planning

either. The USB port isn't even functional yet. Apparently even in the

next release of OS it still isn't functional. The planned future functionality

is to support USB wireless adapter.

Plus I believe it is USB 1.1 not USB 2. It would take forever to backup anything even if they enabled that kind of data transfer. Still, I hope that the USB port doesn't go the way of firewire in the first units.

:D I'm still waiting for them to enable the two firewire ports on my ReplayTV 2000. :D
