I'm about to purchase a new set of speakers and I've fallen for the Tannoy Mercury series.

This is what I have in mind:


Mercury MX4 - front

Mercury MX2 - rear

Mercury MXC - center


The above in combination with my Onkyo TX-DS676.


Here's my question: Is my Onkyo powerful enough to drive the MX4s? If not, in what way does the MX4 differ from the MX3?

The Tannoy Mercury mx4 has a rated sensitivity of 91db (with nominal impedance of 8 ohms). You should be able to drive them with very low power. The mx3 is rated at only 89db. While only slightly lower, it means the mx4 is actually easier to drive. Perhaps it is because the mx4 has two 6" drivers while the mx3 has only one. So, go for the mx4!


Not that it matters, but I like the sound of Tannoy Mercury speakers. A friend of mine has a pair of mx2 in his kitchen, and they sound great.
