Intel Taps DirecTV for Viiv Content, Offers $1M Bounty
Intel seems to be ramping up its focus on Viiv, the Media Center Edition technology that received mixed reviews when first announced. The company has recently announced content deals with both Yahoo!, adding fantasy football stats, and AOL, distributing episodes of "Welcome Back Kotter" for download.
Viiv will be getting a big boost now that Intel has partnered with DirecTV to provide satellite TV service to Viiv users through a set-top box providing high-definition DVR capabilities. The box will be able to record 50 hours of HD content and 200 hours of SD programming.
The announcement was first made in January at CES.
Intel has also announced a $1 million contest for the "smallest and most stylish home PCs powered by" Viiv, with the grand prize winner taking home the dough to mass produce and market their system.
