I assume there can only be one technically correct answer and one that applies across the board to all projectors to the following question:

For the best picture performance, is it better to be at the minimum range of the recommended throw or the maximum range. I think at the maximum range, you would use the least amount of zoom so that's best. Am I analyzing this correctly?

Yes, at the maximum range, the "beam spot" is smallest and you are passing most of your light through the most optically correct center of the lens. If you are using a Panamorphic lens (to adapt 16:9 to 2.35:1 for example) the setup will work better because the size of the beam is smaller and concentrated more on the most accurate part of the Panamorphic lens.

Also, the further back you get, the closer in length the light "beams" that illuminate the edge of the screen are to the length of the beams that illuminate the center. This reduces distortion and results in a more even picture.

That's why projectors belong in the BACK of the room! :D
