A new display technology called "telescopic pixel" is currently developed by Microsoft & the University of Washington to eventually replace LCDs.

LCDs still have a lot of room for improvement, as they only transmit 5-10 percent of the total backlight to the user & still use quite a lot of power, so the telescopic pixel technology could replace LCD technology in the nearby future.
