Text Captioning on DTV - When??

160 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Gerald C
Now that CBS, ABC, HBO, and others are regularly originating DTV programs, when can we expect to get text captioning? Does anyone value this feature, which has become de facto in NTSC programs? Even though I'm not hearing impaired, it's sometimes useful (e.g. trying to figure out the Italian mob-speak lingo in the Sopranos).

Does anyone know if text captioning hardware-capability is mandated (as it is for current NTSC sets) in STBs? I'm fairly sure that the software isn't there yet, either in the STBs or the source encoders.

CC is available on DTV. Some of my local stations have it. HBO-HD had it for a couple of days recently. I don't know why they stopped. Hopefully it was a test to implement it shortly.
Bill-- What STB do you have that decoded it from HBO?
