TH-42PX500U Set up Help

649 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  RandyWalters
Hi everyone, I've been really enjoying our 42PX500U for the past couple of months - thanks to everyone who helped me go for it, and keep it when it seemed initially too big!

I seemed to have mucked up the installation in part, and was hoping someone could help me. (If this isn't the right forum, however, please re-direct me!! The answers to these questions may be brutally obvious, so my apologies in advance for my seemingly-infinite ignorance

The relevant part of our current setup is as follows:

- We have a regular definition, Satellite STB (Bell Canada ExpressVu 3100).

- The TV signal from the STB, via S-Video (only option since it's not an HD STB), goes into the TV through Video 1 S-Video input jack.

- We also have a VCR output hooked up through Video 2 input jack on the TV.

- The TV's video out jack is connected to the VCR input i.

Two things don't work:

1. I can't get any signal when I choose the TV's "TV" menu selection - the TV signal from the STB only comes in when I select the Video 1 selection. Is this normal/correct? I know why it works when I select Video 1, but I can't figure out how to make the "TV" option work too. It's not a huge deal, since I get everything I want through selecting Video 1, but it's annoying me that I may have done something wrong; and

2. While I can watch video tapes, I can't record anything - I just get static. I'm wondering if this is related to problem #1... I've checked all the cables, connections, the VCR itself, etc - they're all fine and nothing's loose. There's something wrong with the setup. Before we got our new Panny, we ran the STB signal through the VCR using co-ax cables, if that matters.

If anyone can help, I'd certainly appreciate it!

Many Thanks,

Mike

I have some ideas but first i need these questions answered in detail:

A. On the VCR, do you want to record from whatever channel the satellite reciever is tuned to, or do you want to record OTA signals from a roof antenna?

B. Do you have an RF cable connected to the RF input on the TV? If yes, tell us how this cable is connected to the input or outputs of the receiver/vcr/TV.

C. Does the ExpressVu 3100 have an RF output that works at all times?

D. Do you have a link to the owner's manual or to any sort of connection diagram for the ExpressVu 3100 so i can see what all the inputs and outputs it has on the back panel? This would be very helpful. I can't find a link to any ExpressVu 3100 owners manual via Google.

E. If no link to manual, describe all the inputs and outputs the ExpressVu 3100 has on the back panel.

F. Back when you had your old TV with the VCR connected in series with the STB and TV via RF cable, did you have to tune the VCR and TV to channel 3 to see and record the signal coming from the STB? I think you did but i want to be sure.

G. What brand/model is your VCR? Do you have a link to the owners manual so i can bring myself up to speed on it's specifics?

Ok presuming that the 3100 has simultaneously active S-Video and RF outputs, i'd connect things this way:

A. Leave the 3100 connected to the TV the way you already have it since it works.

B. Leave the VCR connected to the TV the way you already have it (yellow Composite cable and red/white audio i presume) since it's working normally.

C. Now also run an RF cable from the 3100's RF output to the RF input on your VCR, then tune your VCR to ch 3 (or ch 4) so the VCR can "see" whatever channel the 3100 is tuned to. This way you should be able to record whatever channel the 3100 is tuned to, and see it on the plasma's Video 2 input like you already have it.

Right now your VCR is getting it's video from the TV's Video Out jack so to be able to record, you have to (A) Have the image displayed on the plasma screen and (B) have the VCR tuned to L-1 or Zero or whatever method the VCR requires to tune to it's Video Input jacks on the backside. One of my VCRs must be set to L1, and another must be tuned to channel 0 in order to "see" the rear input jacks. The way you have it, if the TV is off the VCR will not get a video signal so this is probably why you're recording static (is that "18 hours of static" by any chance? :)

D. The yellow Video Out jack on the TV will send whatever you're seeing on the plasma screen to the device it's connected to. You can connect this to a remote TV (i send mine to my 15" LCD on a desk across the room). There's really no need to send this signal to a VCR if you connect the VCR like i said in #C. PS: this jack only works for 480i signals so if you get HD in the future it won't work on those sources.

E. Connect either a roof antenna or good indoor antenna to the TV's RF input so you can pull in whatever OTA HD broadcasts you get in the area (if any). It's also handy for being able to watch TV over the antenna if the satellite service ever goes on the blink (like Dish does at my shop during a heavy rainstorm). If you don't have OTA where you live, then there's really no need to connect anything to this RF input.

PS: Do you know that the quickest way to change inputs is to press the TV/Video key then press the #5 key for Video-2 or #6 key for Video-2? You don't have to scroll or repeatedly press TV/Video. Also, you can press the R-tune button to toggle back to the previous input then toggle back and forth.
