TH58PZ800U for a steal

1435 Views 10 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  speedking
After reading and reading and reading on these forums, I thought I had decided to go with the Panasonic 54V10 or the 50V10. I can get them decently under the EPP with Panasonic. Well, I walked into a local retailer last night and they have the TH58PZ800U on clearance. Basically I can get it for the same cost as the 50V10 through the EPP, and then of course for $400 more I can get the 54V10.

Of course now I have no idea what to do. I like the idea of the 58" and it would fit perfectly, I just don't know if I should care about the "flicker" and all that stuff I've been reading about. Bottom line is, this is my first HDTV ever. I'm coming from a 50" Hitachi rear projection ultravision. I know either way I will notice a huge difference. What do you all think? Go for the TH58PZ800U or the smaller 50V10 for the same price?
I just want to buy one and be happy...

Thanks all

Go big or go home!

Seriously though, the #1 regret for any HDTV buyer is NOT buying as big as you can afford. My first plasma was a 42" Panasonic EDTV, and at the time it was a toss-up between the plasma and a 32" LCD. I am SO glad I went with the bigger set. Same deal when upgrading to my current Panny (50PH10UKA). The 58" is super sweet.

That said, I don't know any particulars on those sets. However, I have been nothing but impressed with all of my Panasonic purchases and I've never hesitated to recommend their sets to anyone. Maybe someone else can tell you something specific about the set.
I will recommend a 58S1. New panel, better picture and it should fit in between both TVs. Best of both worlds.

Not as good as a V10 but damn close yet miles ahead of the PZ800. V10 would be the only choice if you watch a LOT of blu-ray and care about 1080p24 flicker-free. Which I've used maybe 5 times in the passed 3 months...

The "flicker" is when playing "24p" source from blu-ray movies. It changes the refresh from the standard 60Hz to 48Hz to run with the cadence of film (24 frames goes into 48). It is supposed to be more film-like and not have "judder" when 24 frame film is played on a 60Hz tv, through "2:3 pulldown." Do some research on these terms and get your learn on!

Now the newer V10 series can have a refresh of 96hz, which eliminated judder and doesn't add flicker to the image. Great for blu-ray!

The newer set would look better, have the better-for-blu refresh, full 1080 res. panel, less power consumption, and it looks just plain trick. So, ask if judder is a problem for you (even though you probably have lived with it for years) and see if you really are getting a "steal."
That is exactly what I'm doing. Getting my "learn on" by coming here and reading a crap load of posts.

So based on the fact that I probably have lived with the judder for years, I may as well go for the larger one.

As far as the 58S, I can't find squat on that TV. Are they going to make one? On Panasonic's site they don't even have a place holder like they do for the larger V series models...

I want to spend my money wisely. If the better bang for the buck is the 800U cool, but if not, so be it, I will go smaller for the same money. Know what I mean?
I've been thinking about the same issue--cheaper, older 58 incher or newer, more expensive 50 incher. That is a darn good price for the 58pz800. If I could get that price shipped, I think I'd go with that. Yes, the newer models are better, especially if you watch a lot of blu-ray movies, but one factor for me is sound, and the PZ800 has a built in woofer and way better sound. This is imprtant for me since I'm in a situation that won'y allow a surround sound set up. If I do end up getting a V10, I will probably buy a Sony CT-100 sound bar to go with it, adding to the cost.

You could not find squat on the 58" S1 ????, ya must not have looked that hard.

To find the "squat" on the Panasonic TC-P58S1 look at the top of this page and click on the link for "Cleveland Plasma", the 58" S1 is listed with pictures, specs and pricing with all the other Panasonic plasma's.

Myself and many others here have purchased from Chris @ Cleveland Plasma, he's one of the very best online seller's, ships fast, and takes care of you if there is ANY problems at all.

Before you get a soundbar, give the onboard sound from the V10 a shot, it has their new fangled "BBE® VIVA HD3D Surround Sound", perhaps it deserves a try to see if it sucks or not.

Speaking of soundbars, I have owned both the Sony's, CT-100 and the CT-500,, the CT-500 is a big jump in sound quality over the CT-100.

The Sony CT-500 really sounds amazing !!!!!!!

What is your viewing distance? Without knowing this I will assume that since you have a 50" display, you are merely looking at the 58" because it's a deal. I normally encourage buyers to get the biggest display they can afford, if the quality is relatively equal. Of the alternatives you listed, I'd go with the 54G10. Since you have a 50" now, you will increase your screen size and get a quality set. The 800U was a fine display, but it's no match for any of the new NEO plasmas in the 09 lineup. Some posters on here jumped on the 58" models because they were a bargain, now some have remorse because the new 09 panels are better. I don't want to seem like I am downgrading the 58", it will be much better than what you have, but falls short of the 09 models.

In regards to the 09 58" Panasonic models, they haven't been released yet. The information above on the Cleveland Plasma site is only for a pre-order.
