'Thanks' and a question on my first purchase.

While researching FPs I was convinced, thanks to this forum, that CRT was the way to go. I have been a long time lurker, so I would first just like to thank everyone for the (indirect) help I have received through reading these informative threads.

Now I am considering buying a local BG808. From what I have read on this site, this projector is well-liked and could be a good place for me to start. It would also appear as though parts are readily available should I have need. I have not seen this projector in action with source material. But it does fire up and I have seen the CRTs. The red has very minor wear. I have attached pictures of the blue and green tube. From what little I know, I would rate the blue at a 6 and the green as a 5 on the ********* wear chart. Is that accurate? I don't see any image burns. If the green is a 5, I would need to replace it, correct? Is a couple hundred dollars for this projector a good buy? Thanks for the help.

Attached is the blue CRT.

you don't "need" to replace any of those for now, a few thousand hours left on those phosphors at least, eventually though the color in-balance will start to bug you and at that point I would replace all 3 together to make everything perfect. The bigger concern now is that the machine dosen't have 10K hours in standby, the tube heater (gun) will be weak and unable to produce enough light output (you'll have to do a full set-up in a light-controled room to check this). Regradless, if it's a complete 808 that powers up it's worth a lot more than $200., even if all 3 tubes are dead.
Thanks for the reply. I didn't realize that high standby hours would be detrimental to its brightness. If I remember correctly, the chassis hours were over 10K.
FYI, replacement tubes will run you about 500 each plus install charges, if any.

If you can get the projector cheap enough, it's probably worth doing it. How

much does an 808 go for with a set of new tubes? More than 1500 bucks,

I guarantee that!

The wear on the phosphor, though hard to tell from the picture would be better than a "5" in my opinion probably closer to "7" based on the photos. The wear area is a little small but still not bad. If it has more than 10,000+ the light output could be bad. The higher you go above 10,000 the greater the risk. That of course is assuming the tubes haven't been replaced. Look closely at the tubes on the inside of the projector. See if there is a sticker with the serial number of the projector on the GLASS of the tubes. If there is one then the tubes are original to the projector. If not the tubes MAY have been replaced. You need to look for it on the glass though as the sticker on the electronic/magnetics apply to those not the tube. Also look for a date on the tube. Some have this, though it is usually hard to find/see with the tubes in the projector but obviously if the date is newer than the production date of the proejector the tubes have been replaced.

Short answer to your question, $200 bucks for a Barco 808G that powers on seems very reasonable particularly with what look to be usable tubes. Good luck.

Someone fill me in... the standby hours / tube heater issue, does that get "reset" when the tubes are replaced?

I ask because I have a M-8500 with 15,000 hours (8,000 on, 8,000 standby) that needs new tubes... don't want to have any suprises.
Thanks for all the help. I am still talking to the current owner. But with all this advice, I hope to close this deal soon. This projector will be replacing a 60" 4:3 Sony CRT RPTV. One of the reasons for the purchase is that we are trying to save some floor space. So I will be looking at ceiling mounting the projector. The RPTV looks really nice now in 1080i. But I am hoping the BG808 will give me that wow factor with a 7' or 8' screen.
While it IS possible to reset the hours meter on a Marquee, and I've actually

done it, I have NO idea how it's done and it's not listed in any manual. All I

know is, I took the unit almost completely apart, stored all the circuit boards

in antistat bags for about two weeks, refurbished the chassis, put it all back

together, and the hours meter read zero when it was near 49,000 hours before.

I have NO idea how that happened. I didn't even want to do it. It turned the

serial number into 00000000, too, but that's something I was able to correct.

That service code, I know.

Yes, new tubes=new heater in the tubes so no problems.
