The Aviator - Sound is terribly low, picture quality sub-par?

1168 Views 15 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  thehun
Just bought the BluRay at amazon and the sound volume and quality of this movie is SUPER low.

Even when played at reference volume, its very low. Any other movie at reference level blows my ears away.

I use a Denon 2112Ci Receiver, DefTech speakers, a Projector... all in all around 10k spend in hardware, so it's definitely not my hardware.

Does anyone else have this issue? Also, the movie looks very "red" and "blue". Almost like the color are totally wrong. I have never had a defective movie yet, but I guess it's possible?

Thanks,

Ray

IIRC, the audio is lossy.

What does that mean?

it means Dolby Digital 5.1, not lossless like Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA, and like most Blu-rays. Quite a few discs "in the early days" featured lossy audio mixes.
Oh I see, but does that mean that the movie plays so incredibly low? I spoke to amazon and they are sending me a replacement BluRay. I will report if it makes a difference, but I don't think so. This is stupid.

I don't think the Aviator was ever released with a lossless audiotrack. At least none of my cursory research shows anything but the DD 5.1 tracks; no PCM, no TrueHD, no DTS of any type. But lossy vs. lossless shouldn't affect the volume THAT much (otherwise, how did we stand DVDs?)

Given a choice I would take a lossless soundtrack, but in a pinch even lossy tracks should be listenable.

But the video quality is supposed to be really good, so it's probably a bad disc.

ALL BDs should be lossless...period.

Anything else is B.S.

"Should be" is different from "is," though.

Got a replacement overnight ed from Amazon and the new disc is the same. At 0dB its nowhere NEAR as loud as it should be. In chapter 2 or 3 when there are a flew airplane fly by scenes, one would think that it should have great surround sound or bass, but nope.....

Sad, but true.

Sad, but true.

Yet...while it's certainly disappointing it never prevents me from enjoying the movie either.
I played Serenity and it blows the Aviator away in sound..... and its not much younger than the Aviator. It's a shame....

Ray
They came out over a year apart (Aviator Nov. 2007, Serenity Dec. 2008.) While that isn't a long time in the grand scheme of things, it's eternity in electronics.

You'd think they would get their act together by Avaitor's release, but those were the restless days of the format war. They might have been just rushing titles out just to beat the other side.
The color pallette of the film is supposed to look that way. Scorcese was indulging in a little in-joke: as Hughes was involved in early Hollywood, Scorcese had the early scenes tweaked to look like early Technicolor, which only had red and green seps. This caused no end of wailing and gnashing of teeth when the DVD originally came out.
Is that so? hmm. I don't really enjoy it and thus quit the movie at around 20 mins. Thanks for all the info people!
There are 2 reasons possible why the audio is low.

1 it was mixed that way

2, an unusual setting for dialnorm was used.

It surely won't have anything to do with lossy or loss

less .
