ABC, ESPN And Cox Enter Deal To Test VOD With No Ad Skipping

ABC, ESPN and Cox have teamed up to test out a new video on-demand system that prevents viewers from skipping over commercials. ABC and Cox have signed a non-binding letter of intent, and the trial will take place this fall in Cox's Orange County market.

I don't order VOD- from Cablevision.... but if I did, and I suddenly couldn't skip add's... I'd never use the service again.

I really hope this doesn't catch on because it would naturally be ported over to company owned DVR's next. Lets hope that consumers aren't so nearsighted that they can't imagine the implications...

Personally, I have no sympathy for anyone who has a uses a PVR supplied by a cable or satellite provider, including all those people who brag about how they are getting rid of their RTVs because "HD PVRs are so much better". In fact, I think all providers should all go ahead and disable the fast forwarding capablity on all their PVRs as soon as possible.

It might teach some consumers a lesson. If you are going to be a sheep, you will eventually be led to slaughter.

I'm wondering if the FCC analog to digital mandate will be extended once again, giving more years to replaytv owners. Actually I forget! Is that mandate for OTA only or does it apply to cable companies? or do cable companies have a similar timeline by choice?

Also, even after the digital mandate takes effect and the government sends freebie digital to analog converting top set boxes to people, will DNNA continue to offer guide data, or will they use that as an excuse to relinquish the service to lifetimers?

The FCC mandate applies only to OTA signals, not cable. That said, many cable companies are in the process of getting rid of their analog channels. There is no FCC requirement for them to do this, but they are doing so because they need to recover more bandwidth to offer more HD channels.

The cable company in Chicago has already done this, and it's happened already in other cities too.

My Moto 3416 I (Comcast) with the 30 sec skip does just fine, thank you very much!

Don't get too attached to that 30 sec skip, it's likely to be disabled soon.

How do you do it? The 30 sec skip?

At least japanese vending machines offer free drinks for watching ads
http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/10/j...-watching-ads/

When will the first pvr top set box start offering free drinks for watching ads? It would be a stealthy way to gain mass public acceptance to the idea of business owned vending machines in homes. A guy with a special key could enter your house and restock it bi-weekly.

....

do video cameras film all your trash as it's dumped into the garbage truck? does anyone know?

If not, anyone feel free to get a 'procedural patent' on that.
