Now that I am completing the setup of my home theator , I am looking for suggestions on DVDs to own. What DVDs would you not mind watching over and over again on a large screen (133" 16:9 Dalite) with great special effects , picture quality, sound effects, and a great storyline?

At this point I own 1 DVD - Gladiator.

Here try my list: Click on my DVD collection. Just kidding!

Most of the Superbits, are really good looking on a new setup.

Matrix, U-571, and Pearl Harbors are always some favorites.

Hackers with Jonnie Miller and Angelina Jolie.

The Ninth Gate with Johnny Depp and Frank Langella

All of the James Bond Movies

All of the Star Trek Movies

Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray

Top Gun with Tom Cruise, Anthony Edwards, Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan.

Conan the Barbarian with arnie

Millennium with Kris Kristoferson, Daniel J. Trivanti and Cheryl Ladd

Sheena with Tanya Roberts and Tedd Wass

Witness with Harison Ford, Kelly McGillis

That's enough to get you addicted to watching wide screen movies, the way they were meant to be watched in original OAR!

Thank you all for your input!

I went out and bought the Fifth Element DVD (Superbit) today. I compared Fifth Element and Gladiator on my Hitachi 5500 LCOS projector using a non-progressive Sony DVD player. I noticed the bit rate on that DVD and my Gladiator DVD were identical (448 Kbs), and the picture quality was the same on both . I thought the Superbit DVDs were supposed to have a higher bit rate and better PQ. Do I need a progressive scan DVD player to get a higher bit rate reading on the Superbit DVDs?

You must have been looking at audio bitrate NOT the overall bitrate which would usually be in the 3-10 Mb range. 448 is the top Dolby Digital bitrate. DTS would be in the 700+ to 1.5mb range.

The Pledge

2) Great Sound DTS 1509 bitrate

Lethal Weapon Directors Cut

Twister

Saving Private Ryan

3) Color Saturation very low EE

Fifth Element SB

Isn't the Saving Private Ryan DTS DVD version encoded at the 754 kbit/s data rate? I believe the other two titles mentioned are indeed encoded at 1.509 Mbit/s.

It's hard to recommend films not knowing your taste. Here are some films I think are good for home theater IMO.

U-571

The Fifth Element ( Superbit)

The Thing
