This thread is to see what people think not read as to which dvd player has the best overall picture quality! If you were stranded on a desert island and needed the best pic Q available which unit would you ask for. Pioneer, Denon, Sony, Arcam, Bravo, Samsung, Panny, Zenith, Toshiba, Apex or any dvd player you can come up with that you have experience with. Component, Dvi, Hdmi does not matter, it could have any output. What does matter is the Pic Q! For the norm, try and keep it a unit under 2,500. With HDDVD and BluRay coming, I can't see anyone spending more than that on a DVD player today.

I'll just cut to the chase: Integra 10.5, Onkyo 1000, Denon 3910, Pioneer 59, a couple of Arcams, the old Panasonics that everyone raves about around here, etc. etc. This is just going to go nowhere.

In addition, it's highly dependent on the display device, as I've learned. The same DVD player will look better or worse on certain displays, so it's nearly impossible to look at DVD player PQ by itself without factoring in the display.

I will just jump in and say the DVD decoder that everyone else will forget to mention. Use a Home Theatre Computer! The new Nvidia decoder combined with FFdshow corrects all of the problems that exist in other DVD players and it allows true resizing at what ever resolution you choose and you can output over any type of conector including component cables. White/Black crush, Chroma Bug, Jittering, Green/Red Push, and aspect ratio problems can all be corrected with an HTPC. What more could you ask for? Every single stand alone DVD player has some sort of defect. With an HTPC you can eliminate them all.

You lose convenience with HTPC and for the guy who wants to just plug, play, and be off to the races in seconds, it's not very practical, but yes, it can yield very nice fruits.

It's evident from all the research I've done that the best picture quality is only available from those DVD players that haven't started shipping yet. Every reviewer seems to agree that the player, "just around the corner" is clearly superior. Players only seem to develop significant picture quality problems after they ship. Probably the bits wear out with use....

It's obvious what the best PQ DVD player could be - a heavy case with a reliable DVD drive inside, a decoder chip from a Pany XP50 inside, and an iSCAN HD+ inside. Simple.

Q, not to pounce, but there is simply no STB anywhere that can hold a candle to the convenience of a properly setup HTPC.


PS: when I speak of convenience, I'm referring to "using" rather than "setting up/acquiring".

rbmcgee, I'm assuming you're relying on ripping all your titles to HD's, which some people do not do, because its still up in the air about its legality. There are actually some honest people left in NA. WHen left to our own devices, most do not take the high road.

Obviously ripping DVDs to the server makes the whole process much easier, however even when playing from discs, nothing can beat the convenience of an HTPC. Not by a long shot.


BTW, as I've stated, I own all the DVDs I rip ... so I don't appreciate your insinuation.
